MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team welcomes St. John's to Valley Fields on Wednesday afternoon for its first game against the Red Storm this season.
Opening face-off is set for noon Central time and the game will air live on GoMarquette.com's All-Access Player with Patrick Reed (play-by-play) and MU's all-time saves leader Cole Blazer on the call. Live statistics will also be available.
The game was originally slated for March 27 and is one of two rescheduled contests against St. John's. The two squads will square off in Queens, New York on April 30 in the final regular season matchup for both teams.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a narrow, 10-8, loss to then-No. 10 Georgetown on Saturday in which they led, 8-7, entering the fourth quarter. GU scored all three goals in the final period to hand MU its sixth BIG EAST Conference loss of the year.
Redshirt freshman attackman Devon Cowan posted a career-high six goals against the Hoyas, while Sean Richard made 10 saves in his fifth starting assignment. Cowan's goal total is the second-best mark in program history and the first time that a MU player has reached six goals since Tanner Thomson did so against St. John's on April 8, 2017.
Cowan, who leads the Golden Eagles with 20 goals and six assists, has posted a point in all 15 games of his collegiate career and scored in 13-straight contests.
The Red Storm is 1-6 on the year with a 19-18 win over Hofstra in its season opener on Feb. 13 on Long Island. SJU has lost all six conference games it has played since then and failed to reach double digit goals in every game. The Red Storm have been outscored by an average of 12.5 goals per game in the six BIG EAST losses and is coming off a 19-9 loss at Providence on April 10.
St. John's was on a COVID pause when it was slated to face the Golden Eagles on March 20 and 27 and resumed action on April 3 with a 20-7 loss to Georgetown.
The Madsen brothers are once again among SJU's leading scorers as Joe Madsen's 11 goals and 16 points leads the team through seven games. Mike Madsen has nine goals and 13 points, while Jonathan Huber has scored 11 times.
Marquette is 6-1 all-time against the Red Storm and has won each of the last six meetings, including a 12-8 win at Valley Fields on April 6, 2019 in the last matchup. Wednesday's game marks the fourth played in Wisconsin and the third at Valley Fields. MU's first home game against the Red Storm was a 14-12 win at Hart Park in Wauwatosa in 2015.
Following Wednesday's matchup, MU has three road contests remaining at Providence, Villanova and St. John's on April 17, 24 and 30, respectively.
