He's the first MU player to garner United Soccer Coaches All-American honors
MILWAUKEE – Junior striker Lukas Sunesson has been named a United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American, per release on Thursday afternoon.
Sunesson is the first Golden Eagle in program history to earn United Soccer Coaches All-America honors. The Hermann Trophy Semifinalist was also named to the United Soccer Coaches First Team All-East Region and the All-BIG EAST First Team.
The Taby, Sweden native had a breakout season that saw him score a team-best six goals along with two assists. Two of his six goals were game winners, a mark that ranked him tied for second in the BIG EAST. His 14 points put him in a tie for fourth place in the league while his six goals put him at No. 3 in the BIG EAST. Five of his goals came in conference play and he netted a brace in a 3-1 win at DePaul to give MU its first conference game. Sunesson was also named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman team in 2018 after scoring five goals in his rookie year.
He's played a key role in leading the No. 12-ranked Golden Eagles (8-3-2, 5-1-1 BIG EAST) to one of their best seasons in program history. He scored a penalty kick in MU's NCAA tournament win over then-No. 4 Loyola Marymount in the Round 32 on May 2 as the Golden Eagles took down LMU, 3-1, in PK's. It was the second time in program history that MU advanced to the Round of 16 in the tournament, where it eventually fell to No. 2 Indiana.
Â
Sunesson still has two more years of collegiate eligibility if he chooses to use them. In his Marquette career, he's scored 14 goals with three assists in 50 games played. His 31 points are the most among any active Golden Eagle.
This year's All-Americans will be recognized as part of the United Soccer Coaches College Awards Ceremony, which will be made available to view online as a digital event beginning June 30.
