MILWAUKEE – Junior striker Lukas Sunesson has been named a United Soccer Coaches First Team Scholar All-American, per release on Thursday afternoon. He was also named to the Scholar All-Region team along with teammate Alex Mirsberger.
A double major in operations & supply chain management and international business, Sunesson holds a 3.82 GPA in the classroom. An accounting and finance major, Mirsberger posted a 3.66 GPA on his way to scholar all-regional honors. On the field, he was named Second Team All-BIG EAST and BIG EAST All-Touranment Team in 2020-21. Mirsberger and Sunesson are the first MU players to make scholar all-region since Luka Prpa in 2018. Sunesson is the first MU player to earn First Team Scholar All-America honors.
The latest honors add to a growing number of accolades for the junior striker this spring. He earned United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-America honors and was a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist. He was also named United Soccer Coaches First Team All-East Region and made the All-BIG EAST First Team.
The Taby, Sweden native had a breakout season that saw him score a team-best six goals along with two assists. He played a key role in leading the No. 13-ranked Golden Eagles (8-3-2, 5-1-1 BIG EAST) to one of their best seasons in program history after winning the BIG EAST Midwest Division title and earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16.
Â
Sunesson still has two more years of collegiate eligibility if he chooses to use them. In his MU career, he's scored 14 goals with three assists in 50 games played. His 31 points are the most among any active Golden Eagle.
