Senior school-record holder to compete in decathlon
Marquette University senior Joe Keys is set to compete at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on June 9-10, participating in the decathlon in Eugene, Oregon.
Â
"Joe's training has been going great and he is ready," head coach Bert Rogers said. "Coach Bellford put together an excellent plan for him this season and it's time to put it all together."
Â
The Downers Grove, Illinois, native qualified for the national championships with a career-best effort at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational, hosted by the University of Miami on April 10. He set a school record with a total of 7537 and is seeded 17th in this week's meet.
Â
Keys was named a 2020 USTFCCCA Indoor All-American in the heptathlon in 2020 and was a NCAA Indoor qualifier in the event (cancelled due to Covid). He is the Marquette record holder in the heptathlon and the decathlon and ranks in Marquette's top-10 career lists in five other individual events.
Â
"I've been focusing on getting stronger and faster because it translates to so many of the events besides sprints," Keys said. "It's been great having four weeks to train and I have been working hard to improve in the events where I have traditionally lost points."
