Three Golden Eagles Honored by United Soccer Coaches

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (June 9, 2021) -- United Soccer Coaches announced Marquette men's soccer players Chandler Hallwood, Alan Salmeron and Lukas Sunesson as 2020-21 College Player Award of Distinction Recipients, per release on Wednesday.

The new College Player Award of Distinction was established this spring for its member head coaches to submit deserving player based on one or more of the following criteria:

Player has achieved quality performance on the field;
Represented the highest ideals of team leadership;
Exhibited quality character attributes including sportsmanship and respect for teammates, opponents, officials and the game in general;
Made other significant contributions to the benefit of the program and the community.

A redshirt sophomore, Hallwood played at an extremely high level for the Golden Eagles this season. He went 7-2-2 in net with 50 saves, an .862 save percentage and a 0.65 goals against average. His GAA set an MU single-season record while his save percentage ranks No. 2 all-time. The Third Team All-BIG EAST selection has twice earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors and had three honor roll appearances this season. He was also named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week two times and College Soccer News' Team of the Week once.

Salmeron, a junior midfielder out of Chicago, has been the unsung hero of the Golden Eagles the past couple seasons. A two-time BIG EAST All-Academic selection, Salmeron was ranked as the No. 86 player in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer earlier this season. He started in 12 of 13 games this season and tallied one assist while playing the third-most minutes on the team.

Consensus All-American Lukas Sunesson brings home yet another award after a sensational third season at MU. The First Team All-BIG EAST member scored a team-best six goals in the shortened spring 2021 season and helped pace the Golden Eagles to their best season in nearly a decade.

Marquette (8-3-2) finished the season with a No. 14/13 ranking after winning its second NCAA tournament game in program history and advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2013.
