No. 19 Golden Eagles picked fifth in preseason poll
Junior forward Lukas Sunesson of the Marquette University men's soccer team has been named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
The 19th-ranked Golden Eagles were picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST in a survey of the conference's head coaches. Marquette is one of three league programs ranked among the nation's best in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top-25. Georgetown checks in at No. 5 and Seton Hall is No. 10.
The latest honors add to a growing number of accolades for the junior striker. He also earned CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team and United Soccer Coaches First Team Scholar All-America recognition in the classroom and was a Second Team All-America and a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist on the pitch. He was named to the United Soccer Coaches First Team All-East Region and made the All-BIG EAST First Team.
The Taby, Sweden native had a breakout season that saw him score a team-best six goals along with two assists. He played a key role in leading the No. 13-ranked Golden Eagles (8-3-2, 5-1-1 BIG EAST) to one of their best seasons in program history after winning the BIG EAST Midwest Division title and earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16.
Â
Sunesson has two more years of collegiate eligibility. In his MU career, he's scored 14 goals with three assists in 50 games played. His 31 points are the most among any active Golden Eagle.
