Junior forward semifinalist for award in 2020-21
Junior forward Lukas Sunesson of the Marquette University men's soccer team is on the list of 44 players named to the 2021 Men's Hermann Trophy Watch List, announced by the United Soccer Coaches and Missouri Athletic Club on Thursday afternoon.
Â
Sunesson was among the semifinalists last season for the prestigious award presented annually to the nation's NCAA Division I soccer player of the year. Today marks the first official day of regular season play for the nation's Division I men's programs.
The latest honors add to a growing number of accolades for the junior striker. Earlier this month he was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and was tabbed Second Team All-America by College Soccer News.
Â
In 2020-21, he also earned CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team and United Soccer Coaches First Team Scholar All-America recognition in the classroom and was a Second Team All-America and a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist on the pitch. He was named to the United Soccer Coaches First Team All-East Region and made the All-BIG EAST First Team.
The Taby, Sweden native had a breakout season that saw him score a team-best six goals along with two assists. He played a key role in leading the No. 13-ranked Golden Eagles (8-3-2, 5-1-1 BIG EAST) to one of their best seasons in program history after winning the BIG EAST Midwest Division title and earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16.
Â
Sunesson has two more years of collegiate eligibility. In his MU career, he's scored 14 goals with three assists in 50 games played. His 31 points are the most among any active Golden Eagle.
