Volleyball sweeps Fairfield for Rainbow Wahine Classic crown

HONOLULU – The Marquette University women's volleyball team claimed the title in the Rainbow Wahine Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 25-14, 25-23, 25-15 sweep of Fairfield at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Golden Eagles (3-0) hit a season-high .443 with 44 kills and only five hitting errors on 88 swings. They also notched nine points from the service line and posted 11 blocks in the sweep. Savannah Rennie and Hope Werch each posted 10 kills on the day and five MU players notched at least five. Rennie also recorded seven blocks for a team-high 15 points.

The Stags (0-3) were held to a .114 hitting percentage and recorded 22 attck errors on the day. KJ Johnson put up a match-high 12 kills.

Marquette hit .682 on its way to a 25-14 win in the opening set with 15 kills on 22 errorless swings. Hannah Vanden Berg and Rennie each had four kills in the frame, while Rennie also contributed four blocks. ISU hit -.036 in the first with nine hitting errors against eight kills.

The second set featured eight ties, but MU was able to break free from a tie at 23 for a 25-23 victory on kills from Werch and Taylor Wolf. Johnson had a set-high six kills for Fairfield and Luci Albertson added five on six swings.

MU went up 14-4 in the third and final set on its way to a 25-15 win and its second sweep in as many matches.

Marquette resumes non-conference action on Sept. 3-5 in the Red & White Invitational at Illinois State University. The Golden Eagles face the University of Illinois-Chicago on Friday before matches with Ohio on Saturday and the tournament-host Redbirds on Sunday.
