DEKALB, Ill. — The Marquette University men's soccer team fell on the road Friday night, dropping a 3-0 battle to Northern Illinois.
The Huskies struck early and added two more first half goals, first getting on the board in the fourth minute with as NIU's Nick Markanich found the back of the net on a header directly in front of the goal which snuck past the outreached fingertips of MU goalkeeper Chandler Hallwood. Northern Illinois then executed a corner kick to perfection in the 20th minute to score again, this time off the head of Markanich's twin brother, Anthony.
The lead continued to grow in the 30th minute for the Huskies, as a crossing ball was inadvertently deflected, ricocheting off of a Marquette player for an own goal to make it a 3-0 game, a lead which held through the remainder of the game.
The MU defense tightened up the clamps in the second half, not allowing any further damage on the score card in the second half while allowing just one shot on goal in the final 45 minutes, but the Golden Eagles were unable to find any scoring success of their own. Despite the loss, a plethora of players were able to gain in-game reps during the final road contest on non-conference action, as 24 Marquette players saw action in the match.
