MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf team hosts its annual tournament, the Marquette Intercollegiate, on Sept. 5-7 at the Erin Hills Golf Course, home of the 117th U.S. Open Championship.
Due to an unprecedented 17-team field and expanded roster sizes due to an NCAA blanket COVID redshirt year in 2019-20, the Golden Eagles are also hosting an individual event at Washington County Golf Course in nearby Hartford, Wisconsin on Sunday and Monday.
THE EVENT
The 17-team field features Wisconsin, UC Davis, Purdue, Northwestern, Indiana, Liberty, USF, USC, Minnesota, Texas A&M, Houston, Iowa, ETSU, Kansas, NIU and Ohio State in addition to the host Golden Eagles. Northwestern has won the event twice (2016 and 2018), while Texas A&M captured the team title in 2017. Purdue was the winner of the last Marquette Intercollegiate in 2019 with a 9-under par 855, two strokes ahead of Northwestern and two ahead of UCLA. Fourteen teams (including MU) have previously competed in MU's home fall event, while USC, ETSU and Kansas are making their first appearance.
This is the first year that the event is held in early September. All previous events have been held in early October since the Marquette Intercollegiate began in 2013. Erin Hills has hosted the tournament every fall since 2013, except for 2016 when the event was held at Milwaukee Country Club as the course prepared to host the 2017 U.S. Open, and in the 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The three-day tournament features 18 holes each day with play beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday and Monday, and 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Live results will be available courtesy of Golfstat.
Full field (Final 2020-21 Golfstat Team Ranking):Â Marquette (103), ETSU (39), Houston (61), Iowa (40), Kansas (51), Liberty (24), Minnesota (107), Northern Illinois (173), Northwestern (64), Notre Dame (31), Ohio State (49), Purdue (72), South Florida (45), USC (75) Texas A&M (13), UC Davis (91), Wisconsin (100).
THE COURSE
The par-72 course is set to play at 7,344 yards, though yardage will vary daily as tee boxes change. In addition to Brooks Koepka's 2017 U.S. Open win, the course has also hosted the U.S. Amateur in 2011 and will host the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship in 2022 and the U.S. Women's Open in 2025.
Located 35 miles northwest of Milwaukee in the kettle moraine area of Washington County, the course was ranked as the No. 42 course in the United States by Golf Digest in January. Erin Hills officially opened in 1999 and its glaciated landscape features bentgrass greens and fine fescue fairways.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING…
Head coach Steve Bailey: "From top to bottom it might be the strongest field we've ever had. So for us it's also the first time this event has kicked off our season. It's nice to go to a place that we're familiar with and a guy like Hunter (Eichhorn) won last time around, so he's bringing a lot of confidence into this. We're excited for the opportunity to get started at a place we are very familiar with."
"Our maturity and leadership - we're a pretty veteran group this year. We've been through a lot together. And the competition we've been able to create this year already. We've got a bigger roster than previous years, so the competition has helped everyone's game. The combination of our veteran roster and the competition within that is important. The venues we get to go play, having places like Erin Hills and Whistling Straights to practice at, will prepare us for the schedule we've created. As good as it was last spring, we've got a great schedule this season and we want to be prepared for the postseason."
Redshirt senior Hunter Eichhorn:Â "It's definitely a good place to begin the year and a place that I've played a lot over the last five years. It's a golf course I really enjoy playing and I've had success at. We've been playing there recently and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to play with the boys again".Â
