WASHINGTON – The Marquette University women's volleyball team swept Georgetown, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23, on Saturday afternoon at McDonough Arena to improve to 2-0 in BIG EAST Conference action.
The Golden Eagles (11-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) were led by 17 kills, 16 assists and four blocks from graduate student Taylor Wolf, while freshman Jenna Reitsma chipped in her first career double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs plus three service aces. Wolf hit .516 (17-1-31) and Reitsma .308 (12-4-26) as Marquette hit a combined .270.
"It's great to start off BIG EAST play with a pair of road wins," MU head coach Ryan Theis said. "We are in the midst of a stretch of playing five of six matches on the road and 10 of 18 with the unbalanced league schedule. I really liked the job Jenna and Hannah (Vanden Berg) did this weekend. They really stepped up and Taylor Wolf also had a huge performance in our win today."
Marquette opened up a 3-0 lead in the first set and never trailed on its way to a 25-18 victory. Wolf posted three early kills and a service ace as MU went up, 6-2, and Reitsma tied her career high with six kills just in the first stanza alone.
The Golden Eagles broke free from a 12-12 tie in the second set with three-straight points and pulled away for a 25-19 win while hitting .325 (17-4-40).
MU was able to close out its eighth sweep of the season by holding on for a tight 25-23 win in the third set.
Libero Carly Skrabak contributed 19 digs in the sweep, her highest total while wearing a MU uniform.
Giselle Williams led the Hoyas (4-9, 0-2 BIG EAST) with 11 kills. Georgetown hit .173 (29-12-98) for the match.
Marquette has taken 16 of the 20 all-time matches between the two programs and the Hoyas return to Milwaukee for a match on Nov. 19 during the final weekend of the regular season.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles return to the Al McGuire Center for their BIG EAST home opener on Friday, Oct. 1 and their first match against UConn since 2012.
