GLENCOE, Illinois – Marquette University redshirt senior Hunter Eichhorn tied for third with a 6-over 207 following Tuesday's final round at the Windon Memorial Classic at Lake Shore Country Club.
"Just to see Hunter's game get back to what he's capable of doing is big for us," said Marquette head coach Steve Bailey. "He's playing as good of golf as I've ever seen – and he's played at a really high level. To know that he's made strides is really promising for us moving forward."
The Carney, Michigan native was the defending champion of the event and was alone in first place at the conclusion on Monday's opening round with a 5-under 66. He posted four birdies in the first with an eagle on the par-5 13th hole, before ending his round with a bogey on the par-4 18th. He wrapped up his second round this morning with a bogey on No. 16 to finish at 1-over and shot a 2-under 69 in the final round.Â
The Golden Eagles finished 12th in the team standings with a 6-over 858 (275-292-291) after a 7-over 291 in the third round. Marquette was one of five teams which were unable to finish the second round on Monday evening and entered the day at 7-under par, trailing Notre Dame at 10-under and South Florida at 9-under. When play resumed on Tuesday morning, MU's lineup dropped seven strokes on holes 15-18 at the conclusion of the second round to fall down the leaderboard.
"We showed what we were capable of in the first round and got off to a really good start," Bailey said. "We've proven that if we play like we are capable of we can contend with the best teams in the country. What those best teams in the country do is they are consistent. We'll obviously take a lot of positives from the start, knowing what we are capable of and go out and continue to improve. The one thing I know about our guys is we are going to continue to compete until the last putt falls. It's not from lack of effort and grit – we've got to be a little bit smarter in how we're playing. That was the difference this week."
Redshirt junior Tyler Leach was MU's second finisher with a 1-over 214 after posting an even-par 71 in Tuesday's final round. He posted a pair of birdies on both the front and the back and was able to rebound from a double on the par-4 10th hole with birdies on Nos. 11 and 14.
"We have to do a better job of managing our mistakes – turning doubles into bogeys," Bailey said. "Not trying so hard to make birdies, but taking what the course gives us. Not trying to do anything special, that's where you get in trouble at a place like this. There's certain holes that you can take advantage of and others where you need to minimize your mistakes and play for par. We played too aggressive on some holes, trying to play for birdies and making bogeys."
Eichhorn won the previous event in 2019 after shooting a 6-under 207 at Conway Farms. The then-junior shot a 6-under 65 with eight birdies and a bogey-free 5-under 66 through the first two rounds.

The Golden Eagles also won the Windon Memorial as a team back in 2018 behind a third-place finish from Oliver Farrell at 7-under par, and Tyler Leach's even-par performance. In 2007 at Lake Shore, MU All-American Mike Van Sickle shared medalist honors with a 7-under 206.
Kansas claimed the team title by seven strokes with an 18-under 834, while KU's No. 5, Davis Cooper, was medalist with a 9-under 204.
