MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's volleyball team resumes non-conference action at the Al McGuire Center against a pair of top-10 opponents in No. 8 Kentucky and No. 2 Wisconsin on Saturday, Sept. 11 and Sunday, Sept. 12, respectively.
The Golden Eagles (6-0) open the weekend at 6 p.m. on Saturday against the defending NCAA Champion University of Kentucky Wildcats (5-1). Marquette then takes on 2020-21 national semifinalist Wisconsin (4-0) in a Sunday matinee at 4:30 p.m.
The first match against Kentucky will be broadcast live on BIG EAST Digital and FloSports with live statistics through GoMarquette.com. The match against the Badgers is slated for a live national television audience on FS1.
Tickets can be purchased in advance of gameday on Marquette's Ticketmaster site. Individual seats for both matches this weekend are $10.
MARQUETTE (6-0): Marquette won all three matches last weekend to claim the Red & White Invitational title, picking up wins against University of Illinois-Chicago, Ohio University, and Illinois State.
Graduate Student Savannah Rennie picked up most valuable player honors at the Red & White Invitational and consequently, was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday..
She paced the Golden Eagles with 32 kills (2.91 per set) and 15 blocks (1.36 per set), while hitting .348 (32-9-66). She also posted four service aces and added four digs. Rennie led MU with 16 kills in the five-set win over UIC and had a game-high nine with six blocks in the sweep of Ohio.
Outside hitter Hope Werch reached 1,000 career kills on her seventh termination against ISU to make her the 13th player in program history to reach the mark. The Neenah, Wisconsin native is the only player in Marquette history to amass 1,000 kills, 1,000 digs and 150 service aces and just the second player in MU history with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs, joining Jamie Mueller (2003-06).
No. 8 KENTUCKY (5-1): The defending national champion Wildcats went 2-1 last weekend in their home Bluegrass Battle event, picking up wins against Northern Iowa and Southern Cal and a sweep at the hands of Creighton. The Wildcats were swept for the first time in 59 matches, back in the opening weekend of 2019. Â
Sophomore outside hitter Madi Skinner leads the Wildcats with 3.67 kills per set and 4.31 points per set. Junior middle blocker Azhani Tealer has helped out defensively with 1.56 blocks per set while sophomore libero Riah Walker leads all Kentucky players with 4.06 digs per set.
Kentucky won the national championship in 2020 but lost AVCA National Player of the Year Madison Lilley in the offseason, as well as four other seniors.
Â
SERIES WITH KENTUCKY: Marquette has faced off four times against Kentucky, the last match-up being a loss in Sept. 10, 2017. Marquette is 1-3 all-time.
Â
No. 2 WISCONSIN (4-0): The in-state rival has started with four wins, taking down TCU, then-No. 10 Baylor and Dayton in two separate match-ups. The Badgers sit at No. 2 in the AVCA Coaches Poll and have won 24-straight home matches, the last loss coming in Sept. of 2019.
The visitors from Madison have dropped only one set this year and are at a national best .362 hitting percentage with 186 kills and 48 errors. A big part of that success has come from graduate student Dana Rettke and redshirt senior Danielle Hart, who rank fourth and fifth, respectively on the best hitting percentages in the nation.
Â
SERIES WITH WISCONSIN: The Golden Eagles won the last meeting at UW Field House on Sept. 15, 2019 in dramatic fashion, losing the first two sets before picking up the final three for the 3-2Â victory over the fourth-ranked Badgers. Then-junior Hope Werch hit .517 for MU with 17 kills and eight digs in that matchup. The Badgers lead the all-time series 20-2.
Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles host the Marquette Invitational on Sept. 17-18, facing off against University of Texas-San Antonio, Wright State, and the University of Northern Iowa at the Al McGuire Center.
