Dominant post play propels Marquette as Van Kleunen, Karlen record double-doubles
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette women's basketball team (14-5, 7-3 BIG EAST) picked up a convincing win on Wednesday night, defeating Seton Hall 62-43 at the Al McGuire Center.
The dominant post play by the trio of Lauren Van Kleunen, Liza Karlen and Chloe Marotta highlighted the game for the Golden Eagles, as all three brought down 10-plus boards while Van Kleunen and Karlen each went for double-doubles. Van Kleunen scored a game-high 23 points to go along with 12 boards, while Karlen had 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
"I'm overall just really thrilled with our bounce-back win. We had a tough one out there, but I thought that we made some really nice adjustments," said Marquette head coach Megan Duffy. "Our defense was tremendous tonight. I love the way we defended and made things difficult for them."Â
Marquette used strong defense and a dominant performance on the glass to secure the victory. MU won the rebounding battle 54-25, recording as many offensive boards (18) as the Pirates had defensive boards.
After heading into the locker room at halftime with a 27-16 advantage, the Golden Eagles opened the second half on a 18-6 run to take a 23-point lead and never looked back.
With the win, the Golden Eagles were able to even the season series with the Pirates (8-9, 3-6 BIG EAST), who defeated MU in the first meeting on Dec. 19 in South Orange.

Van Kleunen's double-double was her third of the season and fifth of her career. Additionally, this was her third 20-plus point performance of the season.

Karlen's double-double was the third of her career, all three have come this season.

Marotta's 10-rebound game was her fourth of the season and seventh of her career.

This is the first time this season that multiple Marquette players have posted double-doubles in the same game.

This was also the first time this season that three MU players have recorded 10-plus rebounds in the same game.

This was the ninth opponent Marquette has held under 50 points this season, and the third-straight.

At the 1:23 mark of the first quarter, Van Kleunen scored the 1,278th point of her career to move into Marquette's all-time top 20. She passed Carolyn Kieger (2002-06) and Tammy Shain (1988-92), and now ranks 19th all-time with 1,297 points.

Van Kleunen became just the 13th MU player to ever record 700 career rebounds. She currently has 710.

Jordan King fouled out at the 1:32 mark of the fourth quarter.

Marquette recorded 21 assists on 24 made shots.

Marquette outscored Seton Hall in the paint 30-14.

With the win, Marquette is now 17-10 all-time against Seton Hall and 12-0 against the Pirates in Milwaukee.
