Golden Eagles travel east for first of two season meetings with Red Storm

QUEENS, N.Y. — The Marquette women's basketball team (13-5, 6-3 BIG EAST) returns to the road this weekend as it travels to Queens, New York, to face St. John's (6-13, 2-7 BIG EAST). The Golden Eagles and Red Storm will face off on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 12 p.m. (CT) at Carnesecca Arena. The game will be broadcast by BEDN on FloHoops with Matt Ambrose (play-by-play), Mike Watts (analyst) and Meghan Caffrey (sideline) on the call. Live stats are available at GoMarquette.com.
The Golden Eagles currently sit at fourth in the league standings with a 14-5 overall record and a 7-3 mark in conference play. Marquette is riding a streak of three dominant wins entering the weekend, most recently defeating Seton Hall 62-43 on Jan. 26.
After a 3-1 start to the season St. John's has dropped nine of its past 10 contests, and is 2-7 in conference play and 6-13 on the season. Most recently, the Red Storm suffered a 94-88 loss at DePaul on Friday.
The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series against St. John's 18-10, and have won six-straight in the series. Marquette is 7-6 in all-time at Carnesecca Arena. Marquette came out on top in both of last season's contests, winning 66-62 in Milwaukee and 72-61 in Queens.
St. John's has been led this season by junior guard Leilani Correa, who averages 18.8 points per contest, second-most in the BIG EAST. After missing a handful of games in November and December, senior forward Rayven Peeples leads the squad's rebounding efforts with 10.1 boards per game. The Red Storm are coached by Joe Tartamella, in his 10th season with the program.
SCOUTING THE RED STORM
• St. John's enters the contest with a 6-13 overall record including a 2-7 mark in BIG EAST matchups.
• The Red Storm has dropped nine of its past 10 games, most recently losing 94-88 at DePaul on Friday night.
• In 2020-21, St. John's finished the season 8-15 with a 4-12 record in league play. It was picked seventh in this year's BIG EAST preseason poll.
• The Johnnies are 4-3 at home this season.
• Junior guard Leilani Correa has been one of the premier scorers in the country, averaging 18.8 points per contest, second in the conference. She is shooting at a 41.1 percent (115-of-280) clip from the field and 31.4 percent (33-of-105) from 3-point range.
• Senior guard Kadaja Bailey is scoring 15.2 points per game, while junior guard Unique Drake averages 9.9.
• St. John's has the second-highest scoring offense in the BIG EAST at 74.3 points per game.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST ST JOHN'S
• Sunday's game will mark the 29th all-time meeting between Marquette and St. John's, a series which began in 2005.
• MU has won six-straight and nine of the past 10 games in the series.
• Last season, MU won 66-62 in Milwaukee and 72-61 in Queens.
• Marquette is 7-6 all-time against the Red Storm in Queens.

• The Golden Eagles are 34-12 in conference action under Coach Duffy.
• Coach Duffy is off to the best coaching start through three seasons of any coach in program history. She boasts a 57-20 overall mark (.740) at Marquette.
• The Golden Eagles are 47-2 under Coach Duffy when leading at halftime and 32-3 when they turn the ball over fewer times than their opponent.
• MU is 30-3 when scoring more than 70 points under Coach Duffy and 39-4 when shooting more free throws than its opponent.
• In the 77 games of the Coach Duffy era, the Golden Eagles have out-rebounded their opponent in 64 of those games (50-15 record).

DOUBLE DOUBLE-DOUBLES
• In Wednesday's win over Seton Hall, Lauren Van Kleunen (23 points, 12 rebounds) and Liza Karlen (14 points, 15 rebounds) teamed up to each go for double-doubles.
• This was the first time since Jan. 26, 2020 that two MU players went for double-doubles in the same game.
• Chloe Marotta chipped in 10 boards as well, the first time that Marquette has had three players with 10+ rebounds in the same game since Feb. 24, 2019.
• Karlen's 15 rebounds were the most by a Golden Eagle since Erika Davenport had 23 on Feb. 8, 2019.
DUFFY EARNS WIN 100
• Coach Megan Duffy picked up the 100th win of her coaching career on Sunday in Marquette's 78-48 win at Butler.
• Duffy, who is in her third year at Marquette after spending two seasons at Miami (OH), has had a stellar start to her career with a 101-40 (.716) overall record.
• Reaching the milestone in just 140 games, Duffy became the fastest to 100 wins of any of the current BIG EAST coaches.
KARLEN NAMED TO WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
• After playing a large part in Marquette's two dominant road wins last week, Liza Karlen was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
• Karlen averaged 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.5 blocks per contest on the week, while shooting a combined 52.0 percent (13-of-25) from the floor.
• She recorded career highs of eight assists and four blocks against Xavier on Friday, while going for a career-high 19 points against Butler on Sunday.
• This is the second Honor Roll appearance of Karlen's career (Dec. 28, 2020).
LOCK DOWN DEFENSE
• Along with rebounding and strong fundamentals, defense has become one of Marquette's calling cards under Coach Duffy.
• The Golden Eagles are holding opponents to a league-best 54.1 points per game this season, while keeping nine opponents under 50 points. Only five teams in the NCAA have held more opponents under 50 points.
• Additionally, Marquette is first in the BIG EAST in 3-point field goal defense (24.8%), second in turnovers forced (16.9) and field goal defense (36.5%).
LAST TIME OUT
• Marquette picked up its third-straight convincing win, defeating Seton Hall 62-43 on Wednesday.
• The dominant post play by the trio of Lauren Van Kleunen, Liza Karlen and Chloe Marotta highlighted the game for the Golden Eagles, each bringing down 10-plus rebounds.
• Marquette dominated the glass, winning the rebounding battle 54-25 led by Karlen's career-high 15 boards.
• MU opened the second half with an 18-6 gain control through the remainder of the game.
• Seton Hall was held to just 28.1 percent (16-of-57) shooting from the floor.
