Five players score in double-figures as Golden Eagles earn road win
QUEENS, N.Y. — The Marquette women's basketball team (15-5, 8-3 BIG EAST) picked up a road win over St. John's Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena, 70-65.
The Golden Eagles capitalized on a complete team effort, as all five MU starters scored in double-figures led by graduate guard Karissa McLaughlin's 18-point effort.
"I'm so proud of our team," said Marquette head coach Megan Duffy. "In that fourth quarter, we knew it was going to be a flat-out battle. Overall, there was a lot of grit by both teams. I loved our execution down the stretch in getting a few big stops."
Despite MU holding the lead for 26:15 of game time, the majority of the contest was played within a couple of possessions. After leading by four points after each of the first two periods, the Golden Eagles entered the fourth with a 47-46 advantage.Â
After a back-and-forth fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles were able to gain separation at the charity stripe. They shot 6-for-6 at the free throw line down the stretch to secure the win.
Marquette won the rebounding battle 36-28, led by junior guard Jordan King, who tied her career high with nine boards. Sophomore forward Liza Karlen continued her streak of stellar play, going for 14 points, including MU's first eight of the game, eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.Â
Van Kleunen also finished with 14 points, while King and Marotta each had 10.
St. John's (6-13, 2-7) was led by Leilani Correa, who scored a team-high 17 points.

This was the first time that five or more MU players scored in double-figures in the same game since Jan. 27, 2021, at Villanova.

All five starters also recorded at least three rebounds and two assists.

Lauren Van Kleunen moved into 18th all-time on the Marquette all-time scoring list, passing Kathy Andrykowski (1976-80). She currently sits with 1,311.

Marquette recorded 21 assists on 29 made shots, including 10 on 12 in the second half.

Marquette shot an efficient 50.0 percent (29-of-58) from the floor.

With the win, Marquette is now 48-2 when leading at the half under Coach Duffy.

With the win, Marquette is now 19-10 all-time vs St. John's, including seven-straight victories in the series.
UP NEXT: Marquette returns home for a pair of contests at the Al McGuire Center next week, beginning with a game against Providence on Friday, Feb. 4. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (CT) and the game will be broadcast by BEDN on FloHoops.
