Golden Eagles send season out on a high note with explosive offensive performance
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette men's soccer team (5-9-4, 1-5-4 BIG EAST) wrapped up its 2022 campaign on a high note Wednesday evening at Valley Fields, posting a 5-1 win over St. John's.
"This was fantastic, I'm so happy for our seniors," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "This class has worked so hard, and they're really genuinely good men. I'm so proud of them and I've been proud of them all season. This has been an exceptionally challenging year, but the true measure of a person sometimes is how they do their job, and our senior class has been really fantastic."Â
In what was an offensive explosion for the Golden Eagles, Marquette got out to a strong start and never looked back. It was junior attacker Beto Soto who struck first to set the tone early with a seventh-minute goal. That was followed up by a penalty kick goal by senior Lukas Sunesson following a St. John's penalty in the box in the 34th minute, his team-best seventh of the year.Â
Following the goal in the 34th minute, St. John's Nigel Griffith was sent off with a red card, leaving the Red Storm with just 10 men the rest of the way.Â
After taking a 2-0 lead into the halftime break, MU was far from done on the scoring front. In the 72nd minute Brooklyn Merl found the back of the net on an assist from Edrey Caceres. Then, the lead was extended with a pair of quick goal in succession coming in the 86th and 87th minutes, off the feet of Harvey Read and Noah Madrigal, respectively.Â
St. John's scored its lone goal of the contest in the 90th minute on a penalty kick goal.Â
In the match, Marquette held a 19-15 shot advantage, including 12 on goal to just five for the Red Storm. Chandler Hallwood faced 15 shots in net for MU, coming up with four saves.Â
