MILWAUKEE – For the first time in almost two calendar years, the Marquette University men's lacrosse team will host a home game in front of fans with full capacity at Valley Fields when the squad takes on Utah on National Marquette Day, Saturday, Feb. 26.
Tickets are available for $5 online or at the gate on game day and capacity is limited in the seasonal dome. All fans in attendance will receive the team's 2022 schedule poster, featuring senior student-athletes.
The two squads enter the matchup with identical 1-1 records on the year and first face-off is slated for 1 p.m. Central time under the dome in the Menomonee Valley. A free live broadcast will be available on the Marquette Athletics YouTube channel with Dan Avington and Eric Simon on the call. Live statistics are available through GoMarquette.com.
The game marks the start of a four-game homestand for the Golden Eagles, who will play 6-of-7 at Valley Fields through the start of BIG EAST Conference play in April.
MU's last home game at full capacity was an 11-10 loss to Robert Morris and then-head coach Andrew McMinn on March 7, 2020. The Golden Eagles would play one more game that year at Michigan on March 11, the final game of the 2020 college lacrosse season.
THE MATCHUP: Marquette and Utah have never met in regular season action, though the two squads did face each other in Feb. 2019 in exhibition play in Salt Lake City. The Golden Eagles are 3-2 all-time against Utah head coach Andrew McMinn from his time at Robert Morris, most recently that 11-10 loss at Valley Fields on March 7, 2020.
MARQUETTE (1-1): Marquette began the season with a triple overtime win at Bellarmine on Feb. 12 before a 14-10 loss at No. rv/15 Jacksonville last weekend. Freshman Bobby O'Grady leads the Golden Eagles with six goals this season after a pair of scores against the Dolphins. His four goals in the season opener at BU were the most ever in a player's MU debut.
Devon Cowan also scored twice at JU in MU's last game and has now scored in 19-straight contests, one of the longest such streaks in NCAA Division I. Redshirt freshman transfer Luke Blanc scored the first two goals of his career on Saturday and added an assist, while sophomore Pierce Washburn tallied his first career goal in the Sunshine State.
Redshirt freshman Michael Allieri has started both games and has played all 129:05 in net for MU, while making 24 saves with a .522 save percentage. He's made 12 saves in each game.
With MU's point leader from the first game, Russell Melendez, sidelined against Jacksonville, Jake Stegman slid up to attack and freshman Hayden Miller made his first career start in the midfield.
UTAH (1-1): The Utes began the year with a pair of nationally ranked opponents, most recently knocking off then-No. 17 Vermont, 11-10, on the East Coast on Feb. 12. It was the first win for new head coach Andrew McMinn and Utah's first over a ranked foe in program history.
The Utes went up 10-5 over the Catamounts in the fourth quarter before Vermont stormed back to knot the game at 10 with 6:06 to play. Utah's Josh Rose then scored the game winner with 1:28 to play.
Utah began its season with a 14-13 loss to then-No. 12 Denver on Feb. 5 in Salt Lake City.
