Golden Eagles and Boilermakers set for first all-time meeting

MILWAUKEE — The Marquette women's basketball team (22-10, 13-7 BIG EAST) continues its run in the Postseason WNIT on Monday as it hosts the Purdue Boilermakers (17-14, 7-10 Big Ten) in the second round of the 64-team tournament. The Golden Eagles and Boilermakers will tip-off at 7 p.m. (CT) at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee. The game will be broadcast on FloHoops, with Patrick Reed (play-by-play) and Michelle Griffin-Wenzel (analyst) on the call. Live stats are available at GoMarquette.com.
The Golden Eagles come into the matchup with a 21-10 overall record after going 13-7 in league play to place fifth in the conference standings. The BIG EAST automatic bid into the tournament, Marquette defeated Ball State in the opening round of the WNIT on Wednesday in a 93-70 decision. The Golden Eagles used one of their most efficient offensive performances of the season and dominated the glass to move on.
Purdue finished ninth in the Big Ten with a 17-14 overall record and a 7-11 mark in conference play. It took down Southern Illinois in the first round of the WNIT on Wednesday, winning 82-60 in West Lafayette, Indiana.
This will be the first all-time meeting between Marquette and Purdue. MU is making its 10th appearance in the WNIT this season, advancing past the first round in eight of those. The Golden Eagles are 15-9 in WNIT games historically, and 8-2 in WNIT games played at home.
Purdue has been led this season by senior sophomore guard Madison Layden, who is averaging a team-best 11.6 points per game. Junior guard Jeanae Terry has led the squad in both rebounds (6.9) and assists (5.8) per game. The Boilermakers are coached by Katie Gearlds, in her first season at the head of the program.
SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS
• Purdue placed ninth in the Big Ten after posting a 17-14 overall record and an 7-11 mark in conference play.
• In the first round of the WNIT, Purdue secured an 82-60 win over Southern Illinois at home on Wednesday. Senior guard Brooke Moore came off the bench to go for a game-high 27 points in the win.
• On the road, Purdue is 5-6 this season.
• The Boilermakers have been led this season by senior sophomore guard Madison Layden, who is averaging a team-best 11.6 points per game. Junior guard Jeanae Terry has led the squad in both rebounds (6.9) and assists (5.8) per game.
• Purdue ranks 25th in the nation this season in assists per game with 16.1, and 28th in 3-point defense, holding opponents to 27.2 percent shooting from deep this year.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST PURDUE
• Monday's meeting will be the first ever between Marquette and Purdue.
• Marquette is 34-54 all-time against current Big Ten programs.
STARTING FIVE
• The Golden Eagles are 20-6 against non-conference opponents under Coach Duffy.
• Coach Duffy is off to the best coaching start through three seasons of any coach in program history. She boasts a 65-25 overall mark (.722) at Marquette.
• The Golden Eagles are 54-3 under Coach Duffy when leading at halftime and 38-4 when they turn the ball over the same or fewer times than their opponent.
• MU is 34-3 when scoring more than 70 points under Coach Duffy and 45-5 when shooting more free throws than its opponent.
• In the 90 games of the Coach Duffy era, the Golden Eagles have out-rebounded their opponent in 75 of those outings.
ABOUT THE WNIT
• The Postseason WNIT, in its 24th season, is a tournament which features 64 NCAA Division I women's basketball teams from across the country.
• In a single-elimination bracket, each game will be played on campus sites with one of the two teams hosting.
• The tournament will conclude with its championship game on Saturday, April 2, with the title game being broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
• The 64-team field includes 32 teams that receive automatic berths and 32 at-large selections. The automatic bid for each conference goes to the team with the highest finish in their conference standings that didn't make the NCAA Tournament.
PURDUE CONNECTIONS
• Despite Marquette and Purdue having never faced off on the court, there are multiple strong ties between the programs.
• Graduate guard Karissa McLaughlin, who joined Marquette prior to the 2021-22 season, played four seasons in West Lafayette where she started 98 games and appeared in 105. She is the program's all-time leading 3-point shooter with 244, and scored 1,308 total points for the Boilermakers.
• MU assistant coach Kelly Komara holds her own place in Purdue history, as a member of the program's 1999 NCAA Champion squad. She graduated as one of seven players in Purdue history to have at least 1,000 points, 400 assists and 200 steals in their career. Komara finished ranked No. 12 on Purdue's all-time scoring list (1,266 career points), No. 3 in career steals (297), No. 5 in career made threes (137), and No. 8 in career assists (402) at the time of her graduation.
GOLDEN EAGLES IN THE WNIT
• Making their 10th all-time appearance in the WNIT, the Golden Eagles have a strong history in the tournament.
• Marquette won the 2008 WNIT title, posting an 81-66 win over Michigan State in the championship game.
• Two years prior in 2006, MU was the tournament's runner-up.
• Marquette has hosted a total of 10 WNIT games, and has an 8-2 record in those.
• This will be the team's first WNIT appearance since 2014, when it defeated Indiana State in the first round before falling to Indiana in the second round.
