MU is looking for its first team title since 2019 and fifth overall
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf team travels to Pine Mountain, Georgia, on April 25-27 for the 2022 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship Presented by JEEP at Callaway Resort's Mountain View Course.
Â
THE EVENT
Marquette seeks its fifth BIG EAST team championship after securing the title in 2008, 2015, 2017 and 2019. The Golden Eagles are coming off a second-place finish in 2021 (286-296-296—875), concluding play six strokes behind the Huskies.
Â
The first round is set to begin at on Monday, April 25 at 7:20 a.m. Central time with final round action wrapping up on Wednesday, April 27. The event's team champion and individual medalist earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Regional Championships on May 16-18. The NCAA selection show is slated for Wednesday, May 4 at 3 p.m. CT on GOLF Channel.
Â
THE COURSE
Designed by Dick Wilson, the 18-hole, par-72 course plays at 7,057 yards and features Bermuda grass fairways and greens. As one of Georgia's finest courses, it was ranked a top-25 course in the state by Golf Advisor in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2021.
Â
Precision is critical, as the course's tight fairways are littered with towering pines along the edges. New white sand bunkers and new tee boxes have also been installed the make play more enjoyable. Â
Â
Mountain View was home to the Buick Challenge from 1991-2002, hosting PGA Tour champions that included Davis Love III, David Duval and Steve Elkington, among others.
Â
One of Mountain's View most notable holes is the sixth, which is a par-5 that features tee and approach shots over water.
Â
THE LINEUP
Nos. 1-5: Hunter Eichhorn, Tyler Leach, Max Lyons, Nicolás Evangelio, Josh Robinson (Patrick Adler)
Â
Eichhorn is a two-time BIG EAST medalist after winning individual titles as both a freshman in 2018 and last season at Streamsong Blue. He claimed top honors in 2018 after shooting a 2-under (69-73-72—214), and in 2021 by shooting a 7-under (68-71-70—209).Â
Â
The graduate student was a four-time BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week during the 2021-22 campaign and has posted par-or-better in 22 of 29 rounds this season. Eichhorn set a Marquette record with an 11-under 61 in the final round of the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 15 and his 54-hole score of 203 (-13) in the event was a personal low.
Â
The Golden Eagles have also received solid contributions from redshirt juniors Tyler Leach and Nicolás Evangelio and freshman Max Lyons, all of whom have shuffled between the second and fourth spots in the MU lineup.
Â
Leach has been a mainstay for Marquette over the last four years and was the individual medalist at the Crooked Stick Invitational in Oct. 2019 against a loaded tournament field. He also made significant contributions during MU's BIG EAST championship run in 2019, posting 12 birdies in 54 holes to finish seventh at 3-over 216 (67-70-79).
Â
Evangelio was an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection last spring after a 10th-place finish at Streamsong and was MU's second finisher in three of the five events this spring.
Â
Lyons is one of the highest-rated recruits in Marquette history and began his rookie season as MU's top finisher at its first two events of the year, including the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills over Labor Day weekend. He currently holds the MU freshman record for 54-hole tournament total strokes (205) and strokes against par (-11) from the Puerto Rico Classic this spring.
MU has had two freshmen earn medalist honors at the BIG EAST Championship in Matthew Bachmann in 2017 and Eichhorn in 2018.
Josh Robinson enters the event as MU's No. 5, while freshman Patrick Adler will be with the team as an alternate.
