Lyons shoots league-record 64 in first round of BIG EAST Championships

The Golden Eagles lead the field by five strokes heading into round two

PINE MOUNTAIN, Georgia – Freshman Max Lyons tied a 13-year old league record with an 8-under 64 in the first round of the 2022 BIG EAST Championships Presented by JEEP at Callaway Resort's Mountain View Course on Monday.
The Golden Eagles lead the tournament field by five strokes after posting a 7-under 281. Butler is second at 2-under (286), while UConn is 1-under (287) and both Creighton and Seton Hall are even-par.
Lyons led the field with nine birdies in his first conference championship round and tied the BIG EAST record of 64 strokes and 8-under par set by former Golden Eagle Matt Haase in 2009 at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
The Phoenix native had a six-birdie stretch on holes 8-13 and had a clean scorecard until a bogey on the par-3 17th hole. Lyons rebounded on the final hole with a fantastic approach shot on No. 18 and sank a three-foot putt for his ninth birdie of the day.
Graduate student Hunter Eichhorn and redshirt sophomore Josh Robinson each posted even-par 72s on Monday, while Tyler Leach was MU's fourth finisher with a 1-over 73. Robinson had four birdies in the opening round and sat at 3-under heading to the tee box on No. 7 after three early birdies.
Second round play begins Tuesday morning at 7:20 a.m. Central time.
Marquette seeks its fifth BIG EAST team championship after securing the title in 2008, 2015, 2017 and 2019. The Golden Eagles are coming off a second-place finish in 2021 (286-296-296—875), concluding play six strokes behind the Huskies. The event's team champion and individual medalist earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Regional Championships on May 16-18. The NCAA selection show is slated for Wednesday, May 4 at 3 p.m. CT on GOLF Channel.
