Golf tied with UConn after BIG EAST day two

PINE MOUNTAIN, Georgia – The Marquette University men's golf team is tied for first following Tuesday's second round in the 2022 BIG EAST Championships Presented by JEEP at Callaway Resort's Mountain View Course.

Graduate student Hunter Eichhorn fired a team-best 3-under 69 to lead the Golden Eagles (-6, 281-289--570), who combined to shoot a 1-over 289 on Tuesday and sit in a tie with UConn at 6-under (570). The Huskies and Seton Hall (-5, 288-283--571) each shaved five strokes off their team scores on Tuesday to set up a final round showdown for the league's NCAA auto berth.

Eichhorn posted Marquette's lone birdie on the front nine with a four on the par-5 second hole. He was one of four Golden Eagles to bogey the par-4 10th hole at the turn, but followed that with a birdie on No. 11 and an eagle on the par-5 16th.

Nicolás Evangelio, whose birthday was Tuesday, posted birdies on holes 11, 14 and 16 to offset three bogeys on his first 10 holes. He finished at even par on the day and is tied with Josh Robinson at 2-over for the tournament in 19th place.

Freshman Max Lyons in MU's No. 2 golfer in a tie for 10th at 2-under, while Tyler Leach is tied for 23rd at 3-over.

The final round begins Wednesday morning at 7:20 a.m. Central time.

Marquette seeks its fifth BIG EAST team championship after securing the title in 2008, 2015, 2017 and 2019. The Golden Eagles are coming off a second-place finish in 2021 (286-296-296—875), concluding play six strokes behind UConn.

The event's team champion and individual medalist earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Regional Championships on May 16-18. The NCAA selection show is slated for Wednesday, May 4 at 3 p.m. CT on GOLF Channel.
