Golf finishes second at BIG EAST Championships

The Golden Eagles could not overcome a 10-under final round by Seton Hall

PINE MOUNTAIN, Georgia –  The Marquette University men's golf team could not overcome a late charge from Seton Hall and finished as runner-up in the 2022 BIG EAST Championships Presented by JEEP at Callaway Resort's Mountain View Course.

All four counting scores for the Golden Eagles were under par on Wednesday, led by redshirt juniors Tyler Leach and Nicolás Evangelio with 2-under 70s. Graduate student Hunter Eichhorn and redshirt sophomore Josh Robinson each posted 1-under 71s, while Max Lyons notched a 4-over 76.
Marquette dropped three strokes coming in on No. 18 as Seton Hall's Gregor Tait and Andres Acevedo each posted birdies and Robinson bogeyed his final hole of the round. Tait ended up tied with UConn's Caleb Manuel for medalist honors at 11-under par for the tournament.
The Golden Eagles began the day paired with UConn, a squad with which they were tied entering the final round. MU's final round 282 was the third-best for any team in the tournament after its opening round 281 and the 278 posted by the Pirates on Wednesday.Â
Eichhorn, a four-time All-BIG EAST selection, was MU's top finisher for the tournament with a 4-under 212. He had a birdie on the par-5 second hole and 17 pars in the final round for his third top-five finish at the league championship.
Leach had a team-best four birdies on Wednesday, while Evangelio and Robinson each had three birdies in their final rounds.Â
Marquette's 852 ties its second-lowest total score ever in BIG EAST Championship competition. MU posted an 18-under 846 in 2006 and also had a 852 in 2009.
The event's team champion, Seton Hall, and individual medalist, UConn's Manuel, earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Regional Championships on May 16-18. The NCAA selection show is slated for Wednesday, May 4 at 3 p.m. CT on GOLF Channel.
