Kyra LaMotte records four goals, Lydia Foust posts fifth hat trick of season for MU
MILWAUKEE -Â The Marquette University women's lacrosse team (8-8, 3-1 BIG EAST) defeated Georgetown 14-12 on Sunday afternoon in its final home game of the regular season.
"Everything about the game was great," said Marquette head coach Meredith Black. "The team played so hard, and they played together. All week we've been working on connection and on our defense especially. After letting in a bunch of goals against Butler and Notre Dame, we wanted to tighten up the ship on defense and work together, and we did. That fed to the offense, so the whole team was firing on all cylinders as a unit. When we do that, we're really good."
The Golden Eagles got on top early, opening up a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter, before the Hoyas responded with five unanswered goals hop out to a 6-5 advantage. After a close second and third quarter and a tied game at the half, Marquette was able to pull away in the fourth quarter as it scored four goals over a 4:53 span to break a 9-9 tie. Freshman attacker/midfielder Elise Smigiel and graduate attacker Kyra LaMotte each scored twice during the surge.Â
The Hoyas would go on to pull within one, but junior midfielder Emma Soccodato scored with 1:45 left to play to secure the victory.
Â
LaMotte led the Golden Eagles with four goals in the contest, while senior midfielder Lydia Foust tallied three goals and one assist to record her fifth hat trick of the season. Soccodato, Elise Smigiel and Meg Bireley each supplied two goals.
Â
Graduate goalie Amanda Rumsey made 10 saves between the pipes to record double-digit saves for the fourth time in the past five games. Senior defender Ellie Henry posted a game-high 10 draw controls, while Mary Blee and Soccodato each had three.
Prior to the game, graduates Kyra LaMotte and Amanda Rumsey and seniors Delaney Friel, Lydia Foust, Rebecca Cappaert, Ellie Henry, Lauren Shaw, Caroline Blandford, Shea Garcia and Maria Mulvihill were all honored as part of a Senior Day ceremony.
Â
Ali Diamond led Georgetown (7-8, 2-2 BIG EAST) with five goals, and Erin Bakes added three. Emily Gaven made 11 saves in goal, and LizaBanks Campagna finished with seven draw controls.
