Golden Eagles also travel to Central Michigan August 21
The Marquette University women's soccer team (0-0-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) opens its 30th season of competition and third under head coach Frank Pelaez on Thursday night when the team travels to No. 16 Notre Dame (0-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC) at 6 p.m. CT in non-conference action.
Following Thursday's outing, the Golden Eagles will travel to Central Michigan (0-0-0, 0-0-0 MAC) for a 12 p.m. CT matchup on Sunday, August 21.
Familiar Foes Opening Week
Marquette faced both Notre Dame and Central Michigan in 2021 at Valley Fields, falling 1-0 to the Fighting Irish on a late strike and hanging on for a 4-3 win over the Chippewas.
The Golden Eagles are 3-8-0 all-time against Notre Dame, with a majority of the outings coming while both programs were members of the BIG EAST Conference. Prior to last season, the teams most recently met in the 2012 BIG EAST Tournament semifinals, with MU claiming a 1-0 victory.
MU is 5-0-1 all-time against Central Michigan, moving ahead 4-0 on a goal by Katrina Wetherwell on August 19, 2021 before fighting off a late second-half rally attempt by CMU.
Top Scorers Return In 2022
Marquette returns each of its top four scorers from 2021, a group that accounted for 42 total points (16 goals and 10 assists).
Three-time All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree Katrina Wetherell topped the roster in both categories (5 g, 12 points) and senior Rachel Johnson, who started all 17 matches, was second with four scores and 11 points.
All-BIG EAST Freshman Team selection Maggie Starker netted a pair of match winners in her four-goal debut campaign and junior Elsi Twombly already owns six scores in her first two seasons of action.
Overall, Marquette returns a group of eight players who accounted for 21 of the team's 23 goals last season.
Minutes Available In Lineup
Marquette lost a talented group of seniors last season, including a group of five individuals who logged significant minutes in recent seasons.
Alyssa Bombacino, Madison Burrier, Elaina Eckert, Maddie Monticello and Kylie Sprecher were all very familiar names to Marquette fans dating back to the 2017 campaign.
The group combined for 326 appearances, 243 starts, 24 goals and 25 assists.
MU Celebrates 30th Birthday
The Golden Eagles will celebrate their 30th birthday in 2022, welcoming back former players to campus Oct. 13-16 for a reunion weekend.
The program has collected nearly 400 wins during its tenure and participated in the NCAA tournament on 13 occasions. MU has claimed 10 regular season league titles in Conference USA and BIG EAST action and four conference tournament titles.
Individual success inclues 119 all-conference honorees, 49 all-region selections, 19 national team appearances and 17 All-America accolades.
