Golden Eagles will remain home to face Utah Tech on Sunday
Milwaukee — The Marquette men's soccer team (0-1-0) fell in its season opener Thursday night at Valley Fields, dropping a 4-2 decision to #11 Tulsa 4-2.
"This was disappointing, we weren't good enough," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "We didn't take advantage of chances we had and they did, then it wore us down not being able to put the ball in the back of the net and we became sloppy. We're not there quite yet."
After a back-and-forth start to the contest, the Golden Hurricane struck first on a shot that was deflected off of a Marquette defender to take a 1-0 advantage in the 30th minute. Shortly after the own goal, they found the back of the net a second time in the 34th minute and eventually took the 2-0 lead into the half.Â
Tulsa tacked on one more goal in the 54th minute before Marquette was able to get on the board, scoring on a Lukas Sunesson penalty kick that was the result of a foul at the top of the penalty box in the 65th minute. After an 84th minute goal by the Golden Hurricane, the Golden Eagles finished the contest strong as sophomore attacker Karim Abdoul Pare found junior attacker Edrey Caceres in front of the net for the team's second goal, coming in the final minute of action.Â
As a team, Marquette registered 16 shots including five on goal, while Tulsa had 18, seven on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Ludvig Målberg played all 90 minutes in net in his collegiate debut, totaling four saves.Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will remain at home as they host the Utah Tech Trailblazers (0-0-0) on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 2:05 p.m. CT at Valley Fields.Â
