Volleyball sweeps Ohio on Saturday

LEXINGTON, Kentucky – The Marquette University women's volleyball team concluded its opening weekend 2-0 with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-15 sweep of Ohio on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Coliseum.

The Golden Eagles hit .280 (43-15-100) in the match, including .308 and .303 in the second and third sets, respectively. Marquette (2-0) was led by sophomore Jenna Reitsma with 12 kills on .417 hitting with six digs and a pair of aces. Middle blocker Carsen Murray hit .467 (9-2-15) with three blocks, while setter Yadhira Anchante had another stellar match with 32 assists, five kills, six digs and three service aces.

Caitlin O'Farrell's eight kills led Ohio (0-1), which MU limited to a .124 hitting percentage.

NOTABLES:

MU head coach Ryan Theis previously led the OU program from 2008-13. Current MU assistants Abby Gilleland and Ryan Walthall played and coached, respectively, under Theis at Ohio.
Gilleland was a MAC Player of the Year and two-time AVCA All-American at Ohio, which posted a 93-33 overall record and went 57-7 in the Mid-American Conference matches from 2012-15. She ranks third in Ohio's record book for total assists (4,702), ranks second in assists per (10.45), and third in hitting percentage (.310).
SERIES WITH OHIO: Marquette is 2-1 all-time against the Bobcats, including another 3-0 sweep at the Red & White Invitational at Illinois State on Sept. 4, 2021.

UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles head west on I-94 to Madison for a Friday night showdown with No. 3 Wisconsin, the defending NCAA champions. The match will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
