Golden Eagles continue three-match homestand
The Marquette University women's soccer team (1-2-0) continues it season-long three-match homestand Thursday night when the team hosts UIC (0-2-1) at 7 p.m. CT at Valley Fields.
Following Thursday's action, the Golden Eagles welcome Green Bay to campus for a 1 p.m. CT matchup on Sunday, Sept. 4.
MU Continues Non-League Slate
Marquette and UIC have met on just one occasion, with the Golden Eagles claiming a 1-0 win on Sept. 9, 2021 at Valley Fields.
Senior Rachel Johnson netted the game winner in that outing, courtesy of a corner kick from classmate Katrina Wetherell.
The Golden Eagles, who haven't met Green Bay on the field since the 2009 campaign, own a 13-1-0 advantage in the all-time series. Marquette has claimed 13-straight against the Phoenix dating back to 1994 and has outscored Green Bay 40-2 during that time.
Cook's PK Give MU First Win
Midfielder Isabella Cook, who is in her first year at Marquette after playing three seasons at Tennessee, converted on a second-half penalty kick at CMU for her first goal of the year. The strike proved to be the game winner and was her first since Oct. 6, 2019.
Cook netted three scores during her freshman campaign with the Volunteers, most recently providing the game winner in a 2-0 victory over Kentucky.
Top Scorers Return In 2022
Marquette returns each of its top four scorers from 2021, a group that accounted for 42 total points (16 goals and 10 assists).
Three-time All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree Katrina Wetherell topped the roster in both categories (5 g, 12 points) and senior Rachel Johnson, who started all 17 matches, was second with four scores and 11 points.
All-BIG EAST Freshman Team selection Maggie Starker netted a pair of match winners in her four-goal debut campaign and junior Elsi Twombly already owns six scores in her first two seasons of action.
Overall, Marquette returns a group of eight players who accounted for 21 of the team's 23 goals last season.
Minutes Available In Lineup
Marquette lost a talented group of seniors last season, including a group of five individuals who logged significant minutes in recent seasons.
Alyssa Bombacino, Madison Burrier, Elaina Eckert, Maddie Monticello and Kylie Sprecher were all very familiar names to Marquette fans dating back to the 2017 campaign.
The group combined for 326 appearances, 243 starts, 24 goals and 25 assists.
MU Celebrates 30th Birthday
The Golden Eagles will celebrate their 30th birthday in 2022, welcoming back former players to campus Oct. 13-16 for a reunion.
The program has collected nearly 400 wins during its tenure and participated in the NCAA tournament on 13 occasions. MU has claimed 10 regular season league titles in Conference USA and BIG EAST action and four conference tournament titles.
Individual success includes 119 all-conference honorees, 49 all-region selections, 19 national team appearances and 17 All-America accolades.
