No. 19 Volleyball beats No. 25 Illinois in five

MILWAUKEE – Sophomore outside hitter Jenna Reitsma posted a career-high 17 kills as the No. 19 Marquette University women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches with a five-set win over No. 25 Illinois.

The Golden Eagles (8-1) picked up their first-ever win over the Illini after falling behind 2-1 following a 25-13 third-set loss. MU rebounded to claim the fourth, 25-19, and hit .500 with 12 kills in a 15-11 fifth-set win.

Reitsma added a team-best three service aces and had 11 kills by the end of the second set with no hitting errors. Yadhira Anchante posted her sixth double-double with a career-high 46 assists and 11 digs.

Illinois (5-5) hit .241 (56-22-141) and was led by 15 kills from both Kennedy Collins and Raina Terry.

NOTABLE:

The win was MU's first in seven tries against the Illini. Marquette is now 1-6 all-time and dropped the most recent meeting to then-No. 14 Illinois in five sets on Sept. 14, 2019 at Illinois State. MU and U of I have met twice in the NCAA tournament in Champaign in both 2013 and 2018.
The Golden Eagles' last win over a Big Ten squad came at then-No. 4 Wisconsin on Sept. 5, 2019.
Sisters of three former Marquette players were across the net on Saturday night. Illinois libero Caroline Barnes is the younger sister of former MU defensive specialist Nicki Barnes (2013-16). Outside hitter Brooke Mosher is the younger sister of former MU outside Madeline Mosher (2016-19) and setter Claire Mosher (2018-21).

UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles host Illinois State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center. The Redbirds claimed the opening two sets of Saturday morning's match against the Illini and held off U of I in five sets.
