Marotta goes for 25 second-half points, La Chapell hits game-winner on the road
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — The Marquette women's basketball team (14-7, 7-5 BIG EAST) won in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon, taking down Butler 65-63 on a buzzer beater at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The Golden Eagles battled from behind to set up a game-winning tip-in from freshman Emily La Chapell, led by a heroic 25-point second half from senior forward Chloe Marotta. With 25 seconds remaining following a game-tying triple from Butler, Marquette inbounded with an opportunity for the last shot. MU's first two shots at the rim missed, but La Chapell was there for the offensive board and putback with 1.2 seconds remaining to secure the victory.
The Bulldogs caught fire early, using a 9-0 run to gain early separation in the contest and hop in front for the majority of the first half. Despite Butler making four of its first five 3-pointers and shooting 50 percent to Marquette's 34 percent in the half, the Golden Eagles forced 11 turnovers and were able to cut a deficit that got as large as 11 points to just four at the half.
After being limited to just two points in 11 first half minutes due to foul trouble early in the contest, Marotta went off in the second half to spark the Golden Eagle offense after the break. She scored 25 of the team's 36 second-half points, while also totaling 14 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.
Marquette used efficient shooting, making 50 percent (14-of-28) of their second half shots, along with a 19-13 rebounding advantage in the half to help its comeback efforts. Senior guard Jordan King finished with 10 points and a game-high eight assists in the outing.
Butler was led by Caroline Strande, who finished with team-highs of 14 points and six rebounds.

Chloe Marotta moved up to number nine on Marquette's all-time rebounding list with 14 boards on the afternoon. She passed Lauren Van Kleunen (2016-22), and now has 809 in her career.

This was Marotta's sixth double-double of the season, and 12th of her career. It was also her fourth 20-plus point outing of the season, and the seventh of her career.

Marotta has had 12-plus rebounds now in four-straight games.

With 10 points, Jordan King now sits in 22nd on Marquette's all-time scoring list, moving past Courtney Romeiser (1989-93). She now has 1,214 points in her career.

Kennedi Myles played a season-high 22 minutes, finishing with six points, four rebounds, two assists a steal and a block.

This was just Marquette's second game this season that finished within one possession. The Golden Eagles are 1-1 in those games.

Marquette won the rebounding battle 34-31, and had 28 points in the paint to Butler's 22.

Marquette finished the game shooting 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the floor, 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from 3-point range and 92.9 percent (13-of-14) from the free throw line.

With the win, Marquette is now 20-9 all-time against Butler with wins in seven-straight and 16 of the past 18 outings. Marquette is now 9-4 against Butler in Indianapolis.
