Marotta hits 1,000-point career milestone as Golden Eagles pick up important league win
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette women's basketball team (18-8, 116 BIG EAST) picked up an important BIG EAST win Saturday afternoon, taking down St. John's 61-38 at the Al McGuire Center.
"This was a tremendous win and really a collective team effort," said Marquette head coach Megan Duffy. "I thought our rebounding and our defense was tremendous today, and we were able to take St. John's out of what they do. I'm really proud of our entire team effort."
Entering the game tied with the Red Storm for fourth in the league standings, Marquette controlled the contest from start to finish to split the season series and improve its standing with just three games left to play in the regular season. MU never trailed in the contest, leading for over 37 minutes of action.
With a layup early in the fourth quarter, MU senior forward Chloe Marotta hit an important career milestone during the fourth quarter, scoring the 1,000th point of her career. She becomes just the 33rd player in program history to hit the 1,000-point plateau, with teammate Jordan King doing so earlier this season as well.
The Golden Eagles set the tone early taking a 10-2 lead right out of the gates. They took a 29-21 lead into the half after a relatively low scoring second quarter from both sides, but then blew things open with a 12-0 run early in the third quarter. Their lead would grow to as many as 26 points.
In what was one of the team's top rebounding performances of the season, Marotta brought down 12 boards including eight in the first quarter alone. As a team, MU won the battle on the glass 46-26.
Senior guard Jordan King had another stellar performance, scoring a team-high 24 points to go along with six boards, six assists and two steals. Junior guard Rose Nkumu led all players with seven assists, as the Golden Eagles recorded 20 assists on 26 made shots.
St. John's (19-7, 10-7 BIG EAST) was paced by the duo of Jillian Archer and Jayla Everett, who scored 10 points apiece.
