Golden Eagles advance to BIG EAST Tournament championship game

NEW YORK – The Marquette University men's basketball team (27-6, 17-3 BIG EAST) defeated UConn (25-8, 13-7) 70-68 to advance to the BIG EAST Tournament championship game.
Tyler Kolek and David Joplin were the top scorers for MU with 17 points each. Joplin knocked down a game-high four 3-pointers on five attempts.
The Golden Eagles and Huskies took the game down to the wire with neither side getting a lead larger than four points. MU found gained an edge from beyond the arc, shooting 35% (6-17) while holding the opposition to 14% (2-14). With three Golden Eagles in foul trouble, Olivier-Maxence Prosper took over scoring duties with nine points in the period.
UConn Big man, Adama Sanogo paced the Huskies with 19 points and 11 boards.
MU and UConn were tied up at 38 after the first 20 minutes of play. Both offenses were clicking in the first half with the Golden Eagles shooting 54% (14-26) from the field and the Huskies scoring at a 47% (14-30) clip. Kolek led all scorers at the break with 14 points in the opening half.
Notables:
MU will take on the winner of Creighton/Xavier in the championship game at 5:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.
