Wooward and Bowman earn their second player of the week honors this season
BIG EAST Release
NEW YORK – Marquette University men's lacrosse player Mason Woodward was chosen as the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, while midfielder Andrew Bowman also earned his second freshman of the week honor, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
The pair, along with attackman Devon Cowan, who earned weekly honor roll recognition, led the Golden Eagles to a 12-11 victory over No. 5 Penn State on Saturday afternoon at Gen. Douglas MacArthur High School in Levittown, New York.
Woodward led a dominant Marquette defensive effort by picking up a game-high seven ground balls and causing two turnovers. He helped hold Penn State to its second-lowest goal total of the season and to just nine goals prior to the final 51 seconds. The game marked the fifth time this season that Woodward picked up at least five ground balls.
Bowman recorded his first career hat trick against the Nittany Lions to earn his first freshman of the week honor since the season's opening awards. His first goal tied the game, 5-5, late in the second quarter and his two third-quarter scores put MU ahead, 9-7. He scored twice in the season opener against Lindenwood and had missed a month of game action after an injury in the Utah game on Feb. 22.
Cowan posted his third hat trick in as many games and is within five points of 100 in his NCAA career. His second score on Saturday put MU ahead 3-2 early in the second quarter and his final tally sealed the victory with 1:18 remaining. It was his 13th career hat trick and his 70 career goals put him in a tie for fourth in program history.
Penn State entered Saturday's game as winner of three-straight games against top-10 foes.
The Golden Eagles, who are receiving votes in both the USILA and media polls, return to action at noon Central time on Saturday against St. Bonaventure in the dome at Valley Fields.
