Golden Eagles overcome five-goal first quarter deficit, led by Bireley's six goals
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Marquette women's lacrosse team (10-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) opened BIG EAST play with a come from behind road win Saturday afternoon, defeating Georgetown at Cooper Field.
The Golden Eagles overcame an early five-goal deficit, led by the stellar play of sophomore attacker Meg Bireley who went off for a career-high six goals. Marquette now sits at 10-1 and has tied its all-time best win total for a season, matching the 2018 team which finished 10-8. It also improved to 6-0 on the road, a new record for road wins in a season.
After an early scoring onslaught by the Hoyas, Marquette found itself trailing 6-1 just 15 minutes in, but bounced back to score nine of the game's next 10 goals and take control. MU won the second and third quarters each 5-1, entering the final stanza with an 11-8 advantage.
With 11:38 remaining in the fourth quarter, a lightning strike in the area caused a half-hour delay with Marquette out front 12-9 at the time of the strike. Following the pause in action, Georgetown scored three goals but MU's Lydia Foust scored two of her own to help the team hold on and secure a 1-0 start to league play. Foust finished with four goals, while also picking up a pair of ground balls and forcing a turnover.
Senior defender Ellie Henry had an all-around spectacular performance, going for eight draw controls, four ground balls, two caused turnovers and a goal. She led MU's efforts on the draw, as the Golden Eagles won the battle in the circle 17-13.
In net for Marquette, Brynna Nixon played all 60 minutes and had a strong afternoon, recording 11 saves with a .478 save percentage.
The Hoyas were led by Kylie Hazen, who had a team-best five points on four goals and an assist.
