Schumar sets BIG EAST assist record, breaks program single-game point record
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — The RV Marquette women's lacrosse team (14-1, 4-0 BIG EAST) extended its win-streak to 11 and remained perfect in BIG EAST play with a 22-16 road win over Butler Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Field in Indianapolis.Â
Marquette attacker Mary Schumar had a record-setting performance, setting new program single-game high marks of 11 points and nine assists. The senior entered the game already holding season records for points and assists, and became the program's career assist leader with her third assist of the contest. She passed Claire Costanza (2013-17) on the list, and now has 107 helpers in her career, the second-ever MU player to hit the 100 assist milestone. Â
Along with her program single-game assist record, Schumar's nine helpers are also a BIG EAST record and are tied for 10th-most by a player in NCAA history.
The Golden Eagles struck early and often, scoring the first six goals of the game to take a commanding lead early. After MU saw its lead grow to as many as six goals, the Bulldogs clawed back into it, eventually tying the game at 9-9.Â
Despite the Butler surge, Marquette never trailed and was able to once again pull away with six fourth-quarter goals to build on the best win total in program history, and remain undefeated on the road.Â
Senior Ellie Henry helped Marquette to a dominant showing in the circle, recording a career-high 15 draw controls, second-most ever by a Marquette player. As a team, MU won the draw battle 26-16.
Lydia Foust had another stellar performance as well, as the senior attacker led all scorers with seven goals to go along with an assist. Freshman attacker Tess Osburn finished with a hat trick, while six different Marquette players went for two goals.Â
In net for the Golden Eagles, sophomore Brynna Nixon played 50 minutes while freshman Ava Sprinkel played the remaining 10, getting in during the second quarter. Nixon recorded five saves, while Sprinkel recorded one.Â
