Dragovic clinches win on senior day
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's tennis team (6-13, 2-3 BIG EAST) took a narrow 4-3 BIG EAST victory over Villanova (6-13, 0-5 BIG EAST) Saturday afternoon at Elite Sports Club – North Shore.
Â
Marquette started the afternoon by honoring the team's senior class. Nathan Balthazor, Stefan Dragovic, Rami Scheetz, and Will Tennison were among those who were honored.
Â
In doubles play the Wildcats took wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to take the crucial doubles point. Pablo Dale and Will Tennison earned a win at No. 3 early, but it was not enough to hold off Villanova.
Â
Freshmen Thomas Nelson and Blake Roegner picked up the first two wins in singles play for MU in straight-set form at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots.
Â
Freshman Gui Da Matta chipped in a straight-set victory at No. 6 (6-4, 6-3). With the win at No. 6 at that point in the match the team score was 3-3 leaving it up to senior Stefan Dragovic at the No. 1 position.
Â
The final point of the match was left up to last season's All-BIG EAST first team player Stefan Dragovic, and he delivered in crunch time. Stefan took the first set and dropped the second but in senior day fashion Dragovic took the intense tie-break victory to clinch the win for the Golden Eagles. Â
Â
UP NEXT: Marquette will travel to Xavier on Friday, April 14.
