MU track & field recognizes top athletes in program history
MILWAUKEE - In celebration of the program's 100th year, the Marquette track & field program would like to recognize some of the top student-athletes who have represented the university across all of the disciplines.
These competitors are among the best to ever wear the Blue & Gold and the current coaching staff selected the individuals highlighted based on a number of factors, including performance in competition and impact on the program. The program's centennial provides the opportunity to not only reflect on the previous 100-years, but to also thank each of the thousands of student-athletes who have competed.
The first event group will be the sprinters with the other groups to follow in the coming weeks.
WOMEN
Crystal Andalcio-O'Neil (2001-2005): Andalcio-O'Neil, a native of Trinidad and Tobago, left her mark on the MU record book with multiple top-10 times, including the school record in the 60m. She posted the fastest 60m time in school history with a time of 7.52 during the prelims of the 2005 Conference USA Indoor Championships. Andalcio-O'Neil finished her career with the No.3 times in 100m (12.03), currently ninth, and the indoor 200m (25.10), currently sixth. She also left with the fifth fastest 200m outdoor time (24.89), presently ninth, and the second fastest time in the 55m (7.10). Additionally, she is a member of multiple relay teams that rank in the top-10 on the all-time performance list.
Jennifer Batie (1998-2002): Batie was the 2002 Conference USA champion in the outdoor 800m with a school record time of 2:07.91. Her time held the top spot at Marquette for 15 years until being broken in 2017. That record was one of nine that Batie broke during her time including the indoor 300m (39.56), 400m (55.00), 4x400 (3:43.99/55.1), 4x200 (1:39.95/24.9), outdoor 400m (54.15), 800m, 4x400 (3:41.50/54.5), and 1600 DMR (4:03.60/2:41.1). Three of Batie's records still stand the indoor 4x400, 4x200, and outdoor 4x400, and holds a multitude of other top-10 marks as a member of different relay teams. Batie earned the most outstanding freshman award in 1999 and was named most improved on the team in 2002.
Daylee Braden (2021-present): Braden is one of two current Marquette athletes to be recognized. Though her time as a Golden Eagle has been short she has left her mark on the program in her first two seasons. She was an All-BIG EAST selection in 2023 after a third-place finish in the 400m at the conference outdoor championships. The Villa Park, Illinois native currently holds six top-10 marks on the all-time performance list. Braden holds the fifth-fastest times in the 300m (40.76), indoor 400m (56.21) and outdoor 400m (55.24). Braden has the seventh-fastest indoor 500m time of 1:16.68, the No. 6 & 9 4x200 times (1:40.29 & 1:40.67) and the fourth and eigth ranked 1600 SMR times (4:01.15 & 4:06.28).
Casey Goodrich (2014-2018): One of the top sprinters in program history, Goodrich was a 15-time All-BIG EAST selection in 200m, 400m and relays. An NCAA West Preliminary Round qualifier in the 400m in both 2015 and 2016. In 2015 set freshman records in the indoor 200m, 300m, 400m, outdoor 200m and 400m. Set ten individual school records and was a part of three relays that set school records. The Franksville, Wisconsin native finished her career with school records in the indoor 200m (24.59), 300m (39.48), 400m (53.97) and 600m (1:33.01), the outdoor 200m (24.18) and 400m (53.73); and ranked 3rd in the 55m (7.18), 5th in the 60m (7.66), 5th in the 100m (11.96), 9th in the indoor Long Jump (18-5) and is a member of several relays on the MU all-time performance list. A member of all four BIG EAST Championship teams, winning indoor and outdoor titles in 2016 and 2017. Named team MVP in 2016, MUT&F Outstanding Freshman in 2015 and recipient of the 2018 MUT&F senior student-athlete award.
Karen Goodwin (1993-1997): Goodwin holds multiple top marks on the MU all-time performance list in the 100m, 200m and relays. Goodwin left Marquette with five school records in the 100m (11,76), 200m (24.37), 4x100 (45.99), 4x200 (1:38.44) and 1600 SMR (4:04.80). She also left with top-10 times in the 55 meters (7.21), 300m (38.94) and 4x200m (1:47.64). Goodwin was a member of the 4x100 relay team that won the 1996 Conference USA title and broke the conference record with a time of 47.70. Goodwin's times in the 100m and 4x100 still hold the top spots in MU history. She was a member of five conference championship teams winning the Great Midwest Conference indoor title in 1993 and the outdoor title in 1994 and won Conference USA indoor titles in 1996 and outdoor championships in 1996 and 1997. She was also named most outstanding freshman in 1993 and most improved in 1997.
Kate Hein (2011-2014): Hein was a multiple-time BIG EAST placer in the 400m, 500m and All-BIG EAST performer in the relays. She set a school record of 1:13.48 in the 500m at the 2013 BIG EAST Championships. Hein was a member of the SMR team that set the school record with a time of 4:00.25 at the 2014 Drake Relays. The SMR time is currently No. 2 all-time. The Green Bay, Wisconsin native completed her MU career ranked third in the outdoor 400m (55.50), fourth in the indoor 400m (57.45), 10th in the 600m (1:37.51) and was a member of several relays on the MU all-time performance list. Hein earned the 2014 MUT&F Student-Athlete Award.
FlaTria Horne (1997-2001): Horne set the standard in sprinting events at Marquette, breaking nine school records during her time. The Racine, Wisconsin native is still the incumbent of the 55m (6.95), indoor 4x400 (3:43.99/55.4), 4x200 (1:39.95/24.5), outdoor 4x100 (45.99) and 4x400 (3:41.50/56.2) records. During her tenure, she clocked the top times in the indoor 60m (7.56), 200m (24.77), 300m (41.04), outdoor 200m (24.40), and 4x200 (1:38.44). She also still holds the 55m (7.20) and 60m (7.63) freshmen records. Horne posted other top-10 marks in the 100m and relays. She was an Indoor National qualifier in 1997 in the 200m. She finished 17th in the prelims with a school and freshman record of 24.88. In the same year, she was named the team's most outstanding freshman. A member of the 1997 Conference USA indoor championship team.
Arianna Mansavage (2018-2023): Mansavage, along with Braden, is one of two current female athletes to be recognized. During her time, she has predominantly competed in the 200, 400 and 4x400. The Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin native holds seven all-time marks, including the No. 3 time in the indoor 300m (40.54) and the No. 4 time in the indoor 400m (55.96). She clocked the No. 10 time in the indoor 200m (25.25), the No. 3 4x400 time (3:47.74/58.4), third-fastest outdoor 400m time (54.80), the No. 9 4x200 (1:40.67/24.6) time and eighth-fastest 1600 SMR (4:06.28/56.5).
Breanne Marchan (2016-2022): The Pine River, Wisconsin native was a five-time All-BIG EAST selection during her time at Marquette. Marchan was not only a decorated sprinter but also a jumper, earning two of her five all-conference honors in the high and long jump. At the 2018 Drake Relays, Marchan set school records running the first leg of the 4x200 (1:37.44/25.1) and 1600 SMR (3:55.77 (25.4). Marchan's marks in the indoor 55m (7.10), 60m (7.57), 200m (24.83), outdoor 100m (11.81), 200m (24.48), and 4x100 (46.21) all rank in the top-five all-time at Marquette. She also holds the No. 5 mark in the indoor long jump (5.78/18-11.75), No. 10 high jump (1.71/5-7.25) and No. 9 outdoor long jump (5.76/18-8.5) mark. A member of two BIG EAST Championship teams, winning an indoor and outdoor tite in 2017. She was also a two-time team captain (2019, 2020) and named most improved in 2019.
Anna Strong (2013-2017): Strong was a thirteen-time All-BIG EAST performer in the 400m and relays. In 2016, Strong ran the 400m leg on the school record-setting indoor Distance Medley Relay team with a time of 11:31.45. In 2014, she set freshmen records in both the indoor 400m (57.09) and outdoor 400m (55.43). The Chicago, IL native finished her career ranked No. 3 in the outdoor 400m (54.91), indoor 400m (55.78) and 300m (40.56). She is currently sixth in the indoor 200m (25.10), eighth in the outdoor 200m (25.06), 10th in the 500m (1:17.26); and was a member of several 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and sprint medaly relay teams that rank inside the top-10 on the all-time performance list. Strong was a member of three BIG EAST championship teams. She won an indoor title in 2016 and an outdoor titles in 2016 and 2017.
MEN
Connor Boos (2015-2019): Boos was a nine-time All-BIG EAST selection in the 100m, 200m and 4x100 relay. He was a member of two record-setting relay teams as the third leg in the outdoor 4x100 (40.71) and 4x200 (1:26.12/21.3). Boos left MU with several all-time marks and still holds the No. 3 spot in the indoor 200m (21.86), No. 7 in the outdoor 100m (10.69), No. 6 in the outdoor 200m (21.57), No. 8 in the 300m (35.69), No. 9 60m (6.95) and several relay marks in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and SMR that rank in the top-10 all-time. Boos was a member of both BIG EAST title teams, winning the conference outdoor championships in 2016 and 2018.
Herman Carr (1938-1942): Competing in the early days of MU track & field, Carr has some of the earliest marks on the all-time Marquette performance list. Nearly 85 years later, Carr still holds two marks top-10 marks in program history. Carr's 4x200 relay team holds the third fastest time in MU history with a time of 1:26.94, and his 400m time of 48.14 is No. 6 all-time (converted 440 yds time). He was a conference champion, winning the 440 yds with a PR of 48.20 at the 1938 conference meet at Marquette Stadium. Carr qualified for the 1938 NCAA Outdoor Championships at the University of Minnesota running the 440yd.
James Jessel (1932-1936): A competitor in the early days of the Marquette track & field program, Jessel competed within the first two decades of the team's official existence. Jessel was a two-time national qualifier. He qualified for nationals for the first time in 1935, competing in the 440 yds at the University of California. He qualified again the following year in the 400m at the University of Chicago. Jessel was the first MU athlete to qualify in those events. There are no recorded results for Jessel.
Marek Krawczyk (1999-2003): A three-time all-conference honoree, Krawczyk holds multiple top-10 marks on the all-time performance list competing in the 200m, 400m and relays. Krawczyk was an all-conference performer at the 2001 Conference USA Indoor Championships, taking second place as a member of the DMR team. He would also receive all-conference honors at the 2002 Central Collegiate Conference Indoor Championships for his third-place finish in the 400m. He was a member of the record-breaking 4x400 relay team (3:11.07) that set the school record en route to earning the bronze medal at the 2000 C-USA Championships. He was also a member of the indoor 4x200 (1:30.74) and 4x400 (3:14.42) relay teams that hold the program records. Krawczyk has 13 top-10 marks on the all-time performance list in the indoor 200m (No. 8), 300m (No. 5), 400m (No.5), 600m (No.9), outdoor 400m (No. 3) and multiple relays. He won the program's Outstanding Freshmen Award in 2000.
Ralph Metcalfe (1930-1934): Metcalfe is one of the all-time greats who set the bar for all future Marquette track & field athletes. A multiple-time All-American, Metcalfe won the 110 yds and 220 yds in 1932, 1933 and 1934. Metcalfe was a two-time Olympic qualifier, competing in the 1932 Los Angeles and 1936 Berlin Olympics. In 1932, Metcalfe earned the bronze medal in the 200m and the silver in the 100m. In the following Olympics, he brought home the silver medal again in the 100m and won the gold in the 4x100 relay. Nearly 90 years later, Metcalfe still holds the school records in the indoor 55m (6.34) and 100m (10.38). He owns the school records in retired events such as the 40 yards (4.5), 60 yards (6.1) 100 yards (9.4) and 220 yards (20.3). The former Olympian still ranks inside the top-10 on the all-time performance list in the indoor 55m (6.34), 60m (6.94) and outdoor 200m (21.24).
Zach Murray (2019-2023): One of two active Golden Eagles from the men's team to be recognized, Murray holds eight top-10 marks on the all-time performance list competing in the 300m, 400m, 500m, 600m and relays. He broke the school and freshman record in the indoor 400m at the 2020 BIG EAST Championships with a time of 47.98 and finished fourth overall. In indoor, Murray has the No. 4 time in the 300m (35.07), No. 6 in the 500m (1:04.89), No. 10 in the 600m (1:21.20) and the No. 3, 4 and 9 spots in the 4x400. He has the No. 5 time in the outdoor 4x200 relay (1:28.11/21.4).
Tyler O'Brien (2008-2012): A two-time NCAA regional qualifier, O'Brien made the 2008 and 2012 NCAA regionals in the 200m. He qualified for the 2008 regional with a freshman and then-school record of 21.23 at Louisville. In 2011, he broke his outdoor school record with a time of 21.05 at the BIG EAST Championships. During the 2012 season, he set the indoor 200m school record of 21.75 at Notre Dame. He tied the indoor 60m school record (6.94) and set the 300m (34.73) school record both of which are freshman records as well in 2008. During the 2008 Outdoor season, he ran the second leg on the school record-setting 4x100m Relay (41.57). O'Brien also set the Freshman Record in the 100m (10.55), a mark that only comes behind Olympic Gold Medalist Ralph Metcalfe. In addition to all the records, the Rocky Hill, Connecticut native finished his career ranked seventh in the outdoor 400m (48.30) on the MU all-time performance list. O'Brien still holds multiple marks on the all-time performance list.
John Rydeski (1977-1981): Rydeski was an all-conference honoree in 1981 after taking home the silver medal in the outdoor 400m with a school record of 47.13. Rydeski cracked seven other school records during his time. He broke the indoor 220 yds (22.6), 300 yds (31.16) 440 yds (49.05), 600 yds (21.05), DMR (9:50.64), outdoor 200m (21.05) and SMR (3:23.26). Rydeski still holds numerous top marks on the all-time performance list in both indoor and outdoor in the 100m, 200m 300m, 400m and relays. He earned several team accolades including outstanding freshman (1978), a two-time team captain (1980 & 1981) and a three-time Melvin "Bus" Shimek Most Valuable Award recipient (1979,1980 & 1981).
Jack Tierney (1929-1933): Tierney was a two-time conference champion during the early days of track & field at Marquette. In 1931 at Marquette Stadium, Tierney was the top finisher in the 100 yds with a time of 9.8. He also went on to win the 220 yds with a meet record of 21.2. Tierney qualified for three-consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships from 1931-1933. He placed sixth in the 220 yds at the 1931 NCAA Championships. He qualified the following two seasons in the 100 yds and 220 yds, with no recorded results. Tierney was named team captain in his senior season.
Joshua Word (2014-2018): An Evans Scholar, Word began his career as a walk-on at Marquette and left a six-time All-BIG EAST performer and two-time conference champion. Word won his first conference title as a member of the 4x100 relay team that won the outdoor title in 2016 with a time of 41.77. It was the team's first title in the 4x100 since 1961 when MU was a member of the Central Collegiate Conference. Word took the gold in the 60m at the 2018 indoor championships with a record-breaking time of 6.86, breaking his record of 6.90 that he set at the league meet the previous year. Word, along with Boos, was a member of the record-breaking 4x100 relay team (40.71). The Chicago native played a part in winning the program's two men's BIG EAST Outdoor titles in 2016 and 2018. Word still holds several top-10 times in the 60m, 100m, 200m and relays.
Julian Wright (2019-2023): A current Golden Eagle, Wright is a five-time All-BIG EAST honoree in sprints and relays. At the 2021 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships he broke the 200m freshman record with a time of 21.13, No. 2 all-time. Wright also holds the freshmen records in the indoor 60m (6.82), 200m (21.78) and outdoor 400m (47.24). During this year's indoor season, he broke the school record in the 300m at DePaul with a time of 34.55. The Eden Prairie, Minnesota native is No. 2 all-time in the indoor 60m (6.82), 200m (21.78), 400m (48.08), outdoor 200m (21.13), 400m (47.24) and 4x100 relay (41.10). He also holds several top-10 times in relays. He earned the team award for most outstanding freshman/newcomer in 2020.

WOMEN
Crystal Andalcio-O'Neil (2001-2005): Andalcio-O'Neil, a native of Trinidad and Tobago, left her mark on the MU record book with multiple top-10 times, including the school record in the 60m. Additionally, she is a member of multiple relay teams that rank in the top-10 on the all-time performance list.
Jennifer Batie (1998-2002): Batie was the 2002 Conference USA champion in the outdoor 800m with a school record time of 2:07.91. Daylee Braden (2021-present): Braden is one of two current Marquette athletes to be recognized. Though her time as a Golden Eagle has been short she has left her mark on the program in her first two seasons. She was an All-BIG EAST selection in 2023 after a third-place finish in the 400m at the conference outdoor championships. The Villa Park, Illinois native currently holds six top-10 marks on the all-time performance list. Braden holds the fifth-fastest times in the 300m (40.76), indoor 400m (56.21) and outdoor 400m (55.24). Braden has the seventh-fastest indoor 500m time of 1:16.68, the No. 6 & 9 4x200 times (1:40.29 & 1:40.67) and the fourth and eigth ranked 1600 SMR times (4:01.15 & 4:06.28).

The Franksville, Wisconsin native finished her career with school records in the indoor 200m (24.59), 300m (39.48), 400m (53.97) and 600m (1:33.01), the outdoor 200m (24.18) and 400m (53.73); and ranked 3rd in the 55m (7.18), 5th in the 60m (7.66), 5th in the 100m (11.96), 9th in the indoor Long Jump (18-5) and is a member of several relays on the MU all-time performance list. A member of all four BIG EAST Championship teams, winning indoor and outdoor titles in 2016 and 2017. Named team MVP in 2016, MUT&F Outstanding Freshman in 2015 and recipient of the 2018 MUT&F senior student-athlete award.
Karen Goodwin (1993-1997): Goodwin holds multiple top marks on the MU all-time performance list in the 100m, 200m and relays. Goodwin left Marquette with five school records in the 100m (11,76), 200m (24.37), 4x100 (45.99), 4x200 (1:38.44) and 1600 SMR (4:04.80). Goodwin was a member of the 4x100 relay team that won the 1996 Conference USA title and broke the conference record with a time of 47.70. Goodwin's times in the 100m and 4x100 still hold the top spots in MU history. She was a member of five conference championship teams winning the Great Midwest Conference indoor title in 1993 and the outdoor title in 1994 and won Conference USA indoor titles in 1996 and outdoor championships in 1996 and 1997. She was also named most outstanding freshman in 1993 and most improved in 1997.
Kate Hein (2011-2014): Hein was a multiple-time BIG EAST placer in the 400m, 500m and All-BIG EAST performer in the relays. She set a school record of 1:13.48 in the 500m at the 2013 BIG EAST Championships. Hein was a member of the SMR team that set the school record with a time of 4:00.25 at the 2014 Drake Relays. The SMR time is currently No. 2 all-time. The Green Bay, Wisconsin native completed her MU career ranked third in the outdoor 400m (55.50), fourth in the indoor 400m (57.45), 10th in the 600m (1:37.51) and was a member of several relays on the MU all-time performance list. Hein earned the 2014 MUT&F Student-Athlete Award.
FlaTria Horne (1997-2001): Horne set the standard in sprinting events at Marquette, breaking nine school records during her time. The Racine, Wisconsin native is still the incumbent of the 55m (6.95), indoor 4x400 (3:43.99/55.4), 4x200 (1:39.95/24.5), outdoor 4x100 (45.99) and 4x400 (3:41.50/56.2) records. During her tenure, she clocked the top times in the indoor 60m (7.56), 200m (24.77), 300m (41.04), outdoor 200m (24.40), and 4x200 (1:38.44). She also still holds the 55m (7.20) and 60m (7.63) freshmen records. Horne posted other top-10 marks in the 100m and relays. She was an Indoor National qualifier in 1997 in the 200m. She finished 17th in the prelims with a school and freshman record of 24.88. In the same year, she was named the team's most outstanding freshman. A member of the 1997 Conference USA indoor championship team.
Arianna Mansavage (2018-2023): Mansavage, along with Braden, is one of two current female athletes to be recognized. During her time, she has predominantly competed in the 200, 400 and 4x400. The Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin native holds seven all-time marks, including the No. 3 time in the indoor 300m (40.54) and the No. 4 time in the indoor 400m (55.96). She clocked the No. 10 time in the indoor 200m (25.25), the No. 3 4x400 time (3:47.74/58.4), third-fastest outdoor 400m time (54.80), the No. 9 4x200 (1:40.67/24.6) time and eighth-fastest 1600 SMR (4:06.28/56.5).
Breanne Marchan (2016-2022): The Pine River, Wisconsin native was a five-time All-BIG EAST selection during her time at Marquette. A member of two BIG EAST Championship teams, winning an indoor and outdoor tite in 2017. She was also a two-time team captain (2019, 2020) and named most improved in 2019.
Anna Strong (2013-2017): Strong was a thirteen-time All-BIG EAST performer in the 400m and relays. In 2016, Strong ran the 400m leg on the school record-setting indoor Distance Medley Relay team with a time of 11:31.45. In 2014, she set freshmen records in both the indoor 400m (57.09) and outdoor 400m (55.43). The Chicago, IL native finished her career ranked No. 3 in the outdoor 400m (54.91), indoor 400m (55.78) and 300m (40.56). She is currently sixth in the indoor 200m (25.10), eighth in the outdoor 200m (25.06), 10th in the 500m (1:17.26); and was a member of several 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and sprint medaly relay teams that rank inside the top-10 on the all-time performance list. Strong was a member of three BIG EAST championship teams. She won an indoor title in 2016 and an outdoor titles in 2016 and 2017.
MEN
Connor Boos (2015-2019): Boos was a nine-time All-BIG EAST selection in the 100m, 200m and 4x100 relay. He was a member of two record-setting relay teams as the third leg in the outdoor 4x100 (40.71) and 4x200 (1:26.12/21.3). Boos left MU with several all-time marks and still holds the No. 3 spot in the indoor 200m (21.86), No. 7 in the outdoor 100m (10.69), No. 6 in the outdoor 200m (21.57), No. 8 in the 300m (35.69), No. 9 60m (6.95) and several relay marks in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and SMR that rank in the top-10 all-time. Boos was a member of both BIG EAST title teams, winning the conference outdoor championships in 2016 and 2018.
Herman Carr (1938-1942): Competing in the early days of MU track & field, Carr has some of the earliest marks on the all-time Marquette performance list. Nearly 85 years later, Carr still holds two marks top-10 marks in program history. Carr's 4x200 relay team holds the third fastest time in MU history with a time of 1:26.94, and his 400m time of 48.14 is No. 6 all-time (converted 440 yds time). He was a conference champion, winning the 440 yds with a PR of 48.20 at the 1938 conference meet at Marquette Stadium. Carr qualified for the 1938 NCAA Outdoor Championships at the University of Minnesota running the 440yd.
James Jessel (1932-1936): A competitor in the early days of the Marquette track & field program, Jessel competed within the first two decades of the team's official existence. Jessel was a two-time national qualifier. He qualified for nationals for the first time in 1935, competing in the 440 yds at the University of California. He qualified again the following year in the 400m at the University of Chicago. Jessel was the first MU athlete to qualify in those events. There are no recorded results for Jessel.
Marek Krawczyk (1999-2003): A three-time all-conference honoree, Krawczyk holds multiple top-10 marks on the all-time performance list competing in the 200m, 400m and relays. Krawczyk was an all-conference performer at the 2001 Conference USA Indoor Championships, taking second place as a member of the DMR team. He would also receive all-conference honors at the 2002 Central Collegiate Conference Indoor Championships for his third-place finish in the 400m. He was a member of the record-breaking 4x400 relay team (3:11.07) that set the school record en route to earning the bronze medal at the 2000 C-USA Championships. He was also a member of the indoor 4x200 (1:30.74) and 4x400 (3:14.42) relay teams that hold the program records. Krawczyk has 13 top-10 marks on the all-time performance list in the indoor 200m (No. 8), 300m (No. 5), 400m (No.5), 600m (No.9), outdoor 400m (No. 3) and multiple relays. He won the program's Outstanding Freshmen Award in 2000.
Ralph Metcalfe (1930-1934): Metcalfe is one of the all-time greats who set the bar for all future Marquette track & field athletes. A multiple-time All-American, Metcalfe won the 110 yds and 220 yds in 1932, 1933 and 1934. Metcalfe was a two-time Olympic qualifier, competing in the 1932 Los Angeles and 1936 Berlin Olympics. In 1932, Metcalfe earned the bronze medal in the 200m and the silver in the 100m. In the following Olympics, he brought home the silver medal again in the 100m and won the gold in the 4x100 relay. Nearly 90 years later, Metcalfe still holds the school records in the indoor 55m (6.34) and 100m (10.38). He owns the school records in retired events such as the 40 yards (4.5), 60 yards (6.1) 100 yards (9.4) and 220 yards (20.3). The former Olympian still ranks inside the top-10 on the all-time performance list in the indoor 55m (6.34), 60m (6.94) and outdoor 200m (21.24).
Zach Murray (2019-2023): One of two active Golden Eagles from the men's team to be recognized, Murray holds eight top-10 marks on the all-time performance list competing in the 300m, 400m, 500m, 600m and relays. He broke the school and freshman record in the indoor 400m at the 2020 BIG EAST Championships with a time of 47.98 and finished fourth overall. In indoor, Murray has the No. 4 time in the 300m (35.07), No. 6 in the 500m (1:04.89), No. 10 in the 600m (1:21.20) and the No. 3, 4 and 9 spots in the 4x400. He has the No. 5 time in the outdoor 4x200 relay (1:28.11/21.4).
Tyler O'Brien (2008-2012): A two-time NCAA regional qualifier, O'Brien made the 2008 and 2012 NCAA regionals in the 200m. He qualified for the 2008 regional with a freshman and then-school record of 21.23 at Louisville. In 2011, he broke his outdoor school record with a time of 21.05 at the BIG EAST Championships. During the 2012 season, he set the indoor 200m school record of 21.75 at Notre Dame. He tied the indoor 60m school record (6.94) and set the 300m (34.73) school record both of which are freshman records as well in 2008. During the 2008 Outdoor season, he ran the second leg on the school record-setting 4x100m Relay (41.57). O'Brien also set the Freshman Record in the 100m (10.55), a mark that only comes behind Olympic Gold Medalist Ralph Metcalfe. In addition to all the records, the Rocky Hill, Connecticut native finished his career ranked seventh in the outdoor 400m (48.30) on the MU all-time performance list. O'Brien still holds multiple marks on the all-time performance list.
John Rydeski (1977-1981): Rydeski was an all-conference honoree in 1981 after taking home the silver medal in the outdoor 400m with a school record of 47.13. Rydeski cracked seven other school records during his time. He broke the indoor 220 yds (22.6), 300 yds (31.16) 440 yds (49.05), 600 yds (21.05), DMR (9:50.64), outdoor 200m (21.05) and SMR (3:23.26). Rydeski still holds numerous top marks on the all-time performance list in both indoor and outdoor in the 100m, 200m 300m, 400m and relays. He earned several team accolades including outstanding freshman (1978), a two-time team captain (1980 & 1981) and a three-time Melvin "Bus" Shimek Most Valuable Award recipient (1979,1980 & 1981).
Jack Tierney (1929-1933): Tierney was a two-time conference champion during the early days of track & field at Marquette. In 1931 at Marquette Stadium, Tierney was the top finisher in the 100 yds with a time of 9.8. He also went on to win the 220 yds with a meet record of 21.2. Tierney qualified for three-consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships from 1931-1933. He placed sixth in the 220 yds at the 1931 NCAA Championships. He qualified the following two seasons in the 100 yds and 220 yds, with no recorded results. Tierney was named team captain in his senior season.
Joshua Word (2014-2018): An Evans Scholar, Word began his career as a walk-on at Marquette and left a six-time All-BIG EAST performer and two-time conference champion. Word won his first conference title as a member of the 4x100 relay team that won the outdoor title in 2016 with a time of 41.77. It was the team's first title in the 4x100 since 1961 when MU was a member of the Central Collegiate Conference. Word took the gold in the 60m at the 2018 indoor championships with a record-breaking time of 6.86, breaking his record of 6.90 that he set at the league meet the previous year. Word, along with Boos, was a member of the record-breaking 4x100 relay team (40.71). The Chicago native played a part in winning the program's two men's BIG EAST Outdoor titles in 2016 and 2018. Word still holds several top-10 times in the 60m, 100m, 200m and relays.
Julian Wright (2019-2023): A current Golden Eagle, Wright is a five-time All-BIG EAST honoree in sprints and relays. At the 2021 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships he broke the 200m freshman record with a time of 21.13, No. 2 all-time. Wright also holds the freshmen records in the indoor 60m (6.82), 200m (21.78) and outdoor 400m (47.24). During this year's indoor season, he broke the school record in the 300m at DePaul with a time of 34.55. The Eden Prairie, Minnesota native is No. 2 all-time in the indoor 60m (6.82), 200m (21.78), 400m (48.08), outdoor 200m (21.13), 400m (47.24) and 4x100 relay (41.10). He also holds several top-10 times in relays. He earned the team award for most outstanding freshman/newcomer in 2020.
