Cline's goal in 35th minutes proves to be the difference
The Marquette University women's soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) picked up a 1-0 victory at Colorado (1-1-0, 0-0-0 Pac-12) on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
Â
Marquette finished the match with 11 total shots, which included five on goal. Netminder Mikki Easter made a pair of saves in the shutout victory, including a diving stop late in the second half.
Â
"For such a quick turnaround and challenging travel, we had a great game plan and the team executed it," head coach Frank Pelaez said. "This team came in with a bend, but don't break mentality, and I am proud of the grit and teamwork it displayed today."
Â
After seeing limited scoring chances through a majority of the first half, the Golden Eagles finally broke through for their first goal of the season in the 35th minute. Mia Haertle's low service on a corner found the heel of forward Kate Gibson at the near post and she was able to touch the ball to Caroline Cline, who was standing at the far post. Cline found the back of the net from just two yards out for her second-career goal.
Â
Marquette's defensive unit saw the Buffs collect 15 shots, but only two were on frame and handled by Easter.
Â
The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, August 24 when the team hosts Denver at 5 p.m. CT in the opening match of the Milwaukee Challenge Cup.
