Merl records goal and two assists in contest
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's soccer team (2-0-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) take a 3-0 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne (0-2-0, 0-0-0 Horizon) Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
"The most important thing early in the season is to grow, get better, and win," head coach Louis Bennett said in his opening statement. "There were many high points from a lot of our guys today, and I think we are creating a competition within the team to continue to get better."
The Golden Eagles started the first half by filling out the match and being strategic about how they wanted to attack the Mastodons defense.
Halfway through the first half Beto Soto took MU's first shot on goal which hit high off the crossbar but was the first quality look for the squad. From there the Golden Eagles put constant pressure on the Mastodons and ended the half with three more shots on target but were unable to find the back of the net.
A tale of two halves for Marquette, two minutes into the second half Christian Marquez scores his first goal on the season and gives MU a 1-0 lead with a goal coming from a great setup by Brooklyn Merl.
In the 56th minute Brooklyn Merl finds the back of the net coming from a long pass from goalkeeper Ludvig Målberg which first was back passed to him by Tristan Rønnestad-Stevens.
Moments later Brooklyn Merl finds Mitar Mitrovic for his first goal on the season in the 59th minute to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 advantage and ultimately sealed the game Marquette.
Keeper Ludvig Målberg finished the afternoon with his first career assist and a clean sheet recording six saves in the match.
Senior Joey Fitzgerald and junior Josh Hewitt made season debuts for the Golden Eagles Sunday afternoon.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, September 1 to celebrate Hispanic heritage as the team takes on Detroit Mercy for a 7:05 p.m. CT matchup at Valley Fields.
