First of seven-straight weekends of competition for MU
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette track and field teams competed at the John Tierney Classic on Saturday in the first meet of 2024.
"This first meet is always kind of a get the rust off type of event," said Bert Rogers. "It's always a challenge coming off the break, we run well in December and then it's a month off. Coming back and getting everyone sharpened back up for competition is key. When people have really good performances in this meet it's a sign of good things to come."
Aaron Hughes ran the fifth-fastest time in program history in the 60m dash at 6.9 seconds. Hughes now owns the fifth and ninth fastest 60m dash times in program history.
"Aaron's a hard worker, talented runner, and he makes the most of that talent," said Rogers. "Big things on the horizon for him."
Annika Bynum claimed first in the high jump, clearing 1.70m/5ft 7in for her second first-place finish of the season. The sophomore has finished inside the top-3 in all three events this season.
Daylee Braden took first in the 200m dash with a time of 25.78 seconds.
Milwaukee natives Lexi Keppler and John Pitta finished second in the mile and triple jump, respectively. Keppler's mile time of 5:15.32 was a new PR.
Kaylee Hopp took second in the long jump (5.32m/17ft 5.5in) and finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 11.69m/38ft 4.25in.
Josh Pirogovsky finished third in the shot put (12.41m/40ft 8.5in), second straight meet finishing inside the top-3.
Pedro Castanon, in his first meet for the Golden Eagles, placed third in the weight throw with a mark of 14.09m/46ft 3in.
Marquette took first and second in the men's 400m dash with Christian Peterson (52.01) and K.T. Thomas (52.46).
