MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf team is headed to the Pittsburgh Field Club on Oct. 14-15 to defend its title as champion of the RedHawk Intercollegiate.
Live scoring of the two-day, 54-hole event is available through Scoreboard powered by Clippd.
THE EVENT
In addition to Marquette, the 15-team field includes Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth, Dayton, George Washington, Eastern Kentucky, Marshall, Georgia Southern, Ohio, Robert Morris, James Madison, Lehigh, Bowling Green, Butler and host Miami (Ohio).
The 54-hole tournament tees off on Monday, Oct. 14 at 8:30 a.m. Central time and the second round will begin at the conclusion of the first. The Golden Eagles begin Monday's shotgun start of holes Nos. 1-4 and final round play will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
The Golden Eagles won a team championship the last time the even was held on April 17-18, 2023 with a 20-over 872 (286-291—295). Then-sophomore Max Lyons led the MU contingent with an eighth-place finish at 4-over-par (217), while Nicolás Evangelio and Bhoom Sima-Aree each finished one stroke behind him in a tie for ninth. Tyler Leach also finished tied for 13th to round out MU's top four players in the top-15 overall.
THE COURSE
The Pittsburgh Field Club was established in 1882, one year after Marquette was founded, and golf was introduced in 1895 on a three-hole course. The original 18-hole design on the current location was laid out by Alexander H. Findlay and constructed by Fred Pickering. It opened for competition on June 1, 1915.
The course has hosted major tournaments over the years, including the PGA Championship in 1937 featuring early golf luminaries Sam Snead and Byron Nelson. The club has also hosted U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur qualifiers and the 1959 Western Open.
THE LINEUP
1. Patrick Adler
2. Max Lyons
3. Johan Widal
4. Vincent Cervantes
5. Ryan Banas
The Golden Eagles are coming off one of their best team performances in program history at the Windon Memorial Classic at Conway Farms with a 7-under 845 on Sept. 29-30. The team score was the ninth-lowest 54-hole score in program history, as was MU's final round 275.
Senior Patrick Adler won his first collegiate event by five strokes at Conway Farms with an 11-under 202 to lead a MU team that placed second in the event by just three strokes behind champion Arizona. Including the Golden Eagles, 14 of the 16 teams at the event had competed in NCAA Regional competition in one of the last two years, while 11 competed in regional play both years.
Adler's classmate and 2023 BIG EAST Player of the Year Max Lyons finished second on MU at Conway Farms in a tie for 17th overall, while junior transfer Johan Widal was third in a tie for 25th. Lyons and Widal have each recorded counting scores in eight of MU's nine rounds this fall and have been MU's two most consistent golfers.
Freshman Vincent Cervantes and sophomore Ryan Banas round out the MU lineup and have the potential to drop low scores to boost MU's top-four scores. Cervantes sits second on the team behind Adler with 30 birdies this fall.
