Volleyball rallies for 3-1 win at St. John's

MU handed St. John's its first home loss of the season

QUEENS, New York – Aubrey Hamilton had a match-high 17 kills and the Marquette University women's volleyball team rallied from a first-set defeat to topple St. John's, 14-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-20, on Friday evening at Carnesecca Arena.Â
"I really liked how we responded after the first set, and even after St. John's point runs in the third and fourth," MU head coach Ryan Theis said. "I thought we had a lot of balance on the road. It was a great team win."
The Golden Eagles (8-6, 4-1 BIG EAST), who handed SJU its first home loss of the season, hit a combined .294 in the victory. Hamilton hit .316 (17-5-38) with seven digs and three blocks, while MU received a 8-0-17 (.471) line from redshirt junior middle blocker Hattie Bray, who added five blocks.Â
The Red Storm entered the match at 9-0 at Carnesecca in 2024 and shot out to a quick match advantage powered by seven service aces. The Golden Eagles responded decisively in the second set by hitting .520 (14-1-25) with four aces and used a 10-0 run to take command. MU then used a pair of 5-0 runs in the third for a 25-18 win and closed out a tighter fourth frame, 25-20.
Erin Jones and Lucrezia Lodi led St. John's (13-6, 2-3 BIG EAST) with 12 kills apiece. Jones added a match-high five service aces and played a big role in SJU's first set victory.Â

NOTABLE:
- MU outside hitter Natalie Ring was second on the team with 10 kills on Friday. She landed a career-high 13 kills to lead MU in Sunday's sweep of Butler and is averaging over 2.00 kills per frame this season.
- Yadhira Anchante notched her team-leading 10th double double of the season with 36 assists and 11 digs. She also contributed three blocks and a pair of service aces.
- BIG EAST hitting percentage leader Carsen Murray hit just .214 (5-2-14), but tied a season-best with seven blocks.Â
- Marquette is 26-9 all-time against the Red Storm and all 35 meetings have come since MU joined the BIG EAST for the 2005 season. SJU won the first three meetings in the series, but MU has won 26 of the last 32 contests.
- MU went just 1-2 against St. John's last season, including a regular season sweep of SJU at the Al McGuire Center, five-set losses in Queens during the regular season and at the Al in the BIG EAST semifinals.
