Fix, McAleenan net goals in victory
QUEENS, New York – The Marquette University women's soccer team (4-7-2, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) opened a two-match BIG EAST road swing with a 2-1 victory at St. John's (5-3-4, 0-2-2 BIG EAST) Thursday night.
The Golden Eagles started the game with pressure on the backline of St. John's. In the eighth minute Haley Christianson put a shot on frame after MU's first corner kick but was blocked the Red Storms' keeper.
MU stayed aggressive and found the back of the net in the 11th minute coming off of a counterattack when Haley Christianson crossed an aerial ball to Emily Fix who netted a header to give Marquette a 1-0 advantage.
The Red Storm responded with a goal of their own in the 14th minute with a shot inside of the box that snuck past MU's backline to tie the score at 1-1.
The Golden Eagles closed the half with a goal in the 32nd minute coming off of a set piece from Adrianna Alberts that found its way to Ella McAleenan who chipped in a header to the bottom left of the goal to give MU a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Eagles' aggressive play stayed steady throughout the second half, MU led the Red Storm in shots (7-0) and in corners (4-2) in the second half to close the match.
"Really excited about the performance tonight, but not so much just a win, but rather the growth of this group. From an on-field standpoint I think for the first time all season we consistently high pressed for 90 minutes and I thought were incredibly disruptive to St. John's build out," head coach Chris Allen said. "I think our team is really starting to learn the price of a goal and it's awesome to see Ella McAleenan put in that effort to take a hit but still score. It's really special to see this team fight back and get a result that we deserved. Huge three points."
McAleenan's goal in the 32nd minute served as the game-winning goal for the Golden Eagles, allowing the squad to escape Queens, New York with a 2-1 victory.
