MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf team returns to action on March 11-12 in St. Simons Island, Georgia at The Johnnie-O at Sea Island on the Plantation Course.
Â
Live scoring of the event will be available through Golfstat.
THE EVENT
The Johnnie-O at Sea Island enters its second year in 2024 and is hosted by MU's former BIG EAST Conference counterpart, Rutgers University. In addition to MU and RU, the event also includes Kansas State, Minnesota, Kansas, Augusta, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State, Texas and UNC-Greensboro.
Last season on Sea Island's Seaside Course, Kansas State claimed the team championship by seven strokes over Cinncinnati and Ohio State by posting a 1-under 839 as the lone team under par. In addition to the Wildcats, Bearcats and Buckeyes, three other teams competing in last year's event were in the top-50 of the Golfstat rankings. K-State's Tim Tillmans captured medalist honors last spring with a 12-under 195 on the par-70 course, five strokes better than the runner-up Barend Botha of Toledo.
THE COURSE
Inspired by the tradition profile of Walter Travis' 1928 original nine-hole course, the Plantation Course was completely redesigned by Davis and Mark Love of Love Golf Design in 2019. The course design brings back some traditional features and character: bulkheads, railroad ties, the Principal's Nose on No. 10 green and a punch bowl green on No. 13. It is the home of the PGA Tour's RSM Classic, a FedEx Cup event hosted by Love.Â

Junior Max Lyons is back in the top spot for the Golden Eagles after posting a 9-under 207 (67-71-69) in a 16th-place finish in the first event of the spring on Feb. 11-13 at the Puerto Rico Classic. Lyons carded his lowest round of the academic year with a 5-under 67 in the opening round and recorded all three rounds under par. His 71.28 strokes per round average this year leads the Golden Eagles, as do his four rounds in the 60s and 11 total rounds of par-or-better.
Graduate students Josh Robinson and Aidan Lafferty follow Lyons in the MU lineup and it was Robinson who finished behind Lyons at the Puerto Rico Classic with a 1-over 217. Robinson carded a 3-under 69 in the opening round, which was his third-lowest round of the year. The native of Lisburn, Northern Ireland led the Golden Eagles to a team title in the last event of the fall, the Dayton Flyer Invitational on Oct. 16-17 at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio. Robinson tied for second in the event individually with a 6-under 207, which is his lowest career 54-hole total.
Lafferty was MU's third finisher in the Puerto Rico Classic and finished in MU's top-two in each of the first three events of the year, the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills, Gopher Invitational and Windon Memorial Classic.
Freshman Ryan Banas and sophomore WIll Hemauer will compete in the Johnnie-O Individual event at Sea Palms Resort.
UP NEXT:Â Following The Johnnie-O, the Golden Eagles will spend the University's spring break training in the Southeast and return to competition on March 24-26 in The Hootie at Bulls Bay.
