The Golden Eagles conclude action at the Sea Island Plantation Course on Tuesday
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Georgia – Marquette University junior men's golfer Max Lyons recorded his first NCAA hole-in-one during Monday's opening round of The Johnnie-O at Sea Island on the Plantation Course on the par-4 10th hole.
Lyons leads the MU contingent through 36 holes with an even-par 144 (70-74) in a tie for 24th place. Graduate student Aidan Lafferty is one stroke behind Lyons at 1-over 145 (72-73), while Josh Robinson's 5-over and Patrick Adler's 7-over are third and fourth in the MU lineup.
Lyons began his day on the par-4 fifth hole with three consecutive bogeys followed by a double bogey on the par-5 eighth. He was able to make a run at the turn, holing out his first shot on the back nine on the 327-yard par-4 10th for his first collegiate hole-in-one. Lyons then recorded five birdies over the final 10 holes to finish with a 2-under 70 in the opening round.
The hole-in-one for Lyons is the first for a MU golfer in competition since Josh Robinson's final round at the 2022 Valspar Collegiate on March 29, 2022 at The Floridian
Lyons entered the week leading the Golden Eagles this season with a 71.28 strokes per round average. And his opening round was his 12th this season of par-or-better.
The Golden Eagles are 14th as a team with a combined 11-over par 587 (291-296), while Notre Dame leads the event through 36 holes.
The Johnnie-O at Sea Island is in its second year in 2024 and is hosted by MU's former BIG EAST Conference counterpart, Rutgers University.Â

THE COURSE
Inspired by the tradition profile of Walter Travis' 1928 original nine-hole course, the Plantation Course was completely redesigned by Davis and Mark Love of Love Golf Design in 2019. The course design brings back some traditional features and character: bulkheads, railroad ties, the Principal's Nose on No. 10 green and a punch bowl green on No. 13. It is the home of the PGA Tour's RSM Classic, a FedEx Cup event hosted by Love.Â
