BRISTOL, Connecticut – Marquette University men's lacrosse player Mason Woodward was chosen eighth overall by the Utah Archers in the first round of the 2024 Premier Lacrosse League College Draft at ESPN's Bristol Headquarters on Tuesday evening.
He is the first Golden Eagle ever selected in the opening round of the PLL College Draft and will be the second MU player to suit up for the Archers (Ryan McNamara, 2021).
Woodward is Marquette's only four-time team captain and three-time USILA All-American (soon-to-be four-time selection), who was a unanimous choice to the All-BIG EAST Conference First Team at close defense. He ended his college career as MU's all-time leader with 265 career ground balls and ranks second in program history with 84 caused turnovers. He paced MU in caused turnovers (18) for the fourth time in 2024, while picking up 53 ground balls and posting three points on a pair of goals and an assist. He notched 13 points on nine goals and four assists in 59 career games.
The native of Towson, Maryland ranks in the top-40 all-time among NCAAÂ non-faceoff specialists with his career ground ball total of 265.
Woodward joins a pair of fellow Marquette alumni in the PLL for the 2024 campaign in Liam Byrnes and MU assistant coach Jake Richard of the Philadelphia Waterdogs.
The only other former Golden Eagle to be selected in the PLL College Draft was 2019 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Noah Richard who was chosen 14th overall by Waterdogs LC in the third round of the 2019 draft. All other MU players to have played in the PLL were acquired through the league's dispersal draft, entry draft or free agent player pool.
Woodward was also selected 56th overall in the fourth round of the 2023 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft by the New York Riptide last September.
