Gibson scores equalizer with 12 seconds left
The Marquette University women's soccer team (0-1-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) opened the home portion of its 2024 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Kansas City (0-0-2, 0-0-0 Summit) on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Kansas City native Kate Gibson headed home a corner from senior Alexa Maletis with just 12 seconds left for the team's first goal of the season.
"It was a tale of two halves for sure," head coach Chris Allen said. "We really challenged the team at halftime, made some tactical adjustments and played on the front foot in the second half. On a day when we honored Dr. Lovell, I thought the way we kept fighting, kept running and didn't give up was a nice tribute to him."
After the Roos outshot the Golden Eagles 7-2 in the first half, Marquette finished with a 6-3 advantage following intermission and also controlled possession.
NOTES
The Golden Eagles open a two-match road swing at Northwestern at 4 p.m. CT on Thursday, Aug. 22.
