Wisconsin State Open Results
MINOCQUA, Wisconsin - Marquette University rising senior Max Lyons held off the field by two strokes after birdies on his final three holes to win the 104th Suter Ward Group Wisconsin State Open Championship on Wednesday at Minocqua Country Club.
Lyons, the 2024 BIG EAST Men's Golf Player of the Year was the first MU golfer to ever earn Academic All-America® honors earlier this summer with second team accolades. Lyons sports a 3.977 cumulative grade point average as a finance major in MU's highly selective AIM program - the CFA Institute's first-in-the nation partner, managing a portfolio of investments for MU.
He led qualifying BIG EAST athletes with a 72.33 stroke scoring average in 2023-24, while posting 17 par-or-better rounds and five rounds in the 60s. His scoring average was plus-0.70 strokes to par and he led MU at six of its 11 events over the academic year. Lyons is a three-time All-BIG EAST selection and was recognized as the 2021-22 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year during his first year on campus. During that spring he set the BIG EAST Championships all-time low men's round with a 64 in round one in 2022 at Callaway Gardens and still holds MU freshman records for low 54-hole score and score-to-par.Â
Lyons is one of just 18 amateurs in the State Open's 104-year history to win the event, joining Marquette assistant coach Jordan Niebrugge who won the title at Blackwolf Run in Kohler. The tournament began in 1919, but was not played in 1943-44 during World War II.
Current MU rising sophomores Ryan Banas and Mason Schmidtke also competed this week but missed the cut, with Banas right on the cutline with a 4-over 148 (72-76) after 36 holes.

MINOCQUA, Wisconsin - Marquette University rising senior Max Lyons held off the field by two strokes after birdies on his final three holes to win the 104th Suter Ward Group Wisconsin State Open Championship on Wednesday at Minocqua Country Club.
"I definitely forgot what it's like to win a golf tournament," Lyons told Gary D'Amato of Wisconsin.Golf following the final round. "It's awesome to win stuff like this but it's such a small part of my life. My faith in Jesus Christ is hopefully something I can profess when I play well and I don't play well.
"I was super relaxed and didn't put too much pressure on myself. It was a really fun tournament. It's been a while since I had a fun tournament where I didn't wrap myself up in a bogey or a double."
Lyons shot a 16-under 272 (65-70-70-67) in the 72-hole event and matched runner-up George Kneiser's final round 67 to win by a pair of strokes. Lyons topped former teammates Tyler Leach (T-3) and Aidan Lafferty (T-6) by three and four strokes, respectively, while fellow MU rising senior Patrick Adler tied for 11th with a 10-under 278 (70-72-68-68).Lyons, the 2024 BIG EAST Men's Golf Player of the Year was the first MU golfer to ever earn Academic All-America® honors earlier this summer with second team accolades. Lyons sports a 3.977 cumulative grade point average as a finance major in MU's highly selective AIM program - the CFA Institute's first-in-the nation partner, managing a portfolio of investments for MU.
