Head coach Chris Allen earns first-career victory
The Marquette University women's soccer team (1-3-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) opened a two-match homestand with a 1-0 victory versus UIC (1-3-0, 0-0-0 MVC) on Thursday night at Valley Fields.
Thursday's match was the first of two for the Golden Eagles in the Marquette Challenge Cup, which also features Milwaukee and Minnesota.
With the win, the Golden Eagles earned new head coach Chris Allen his first-career victory.
Midfielder Emily Fix was the hero for Marquette, netting her first goal of the season at the 87:58 mark. Senior Kate Gibson forced a turnover on the UIC back line and her cross from the right side was perfectly placed in the middle of the box. After an initial header was saved, Fix guided the ball across the line for the winner.
"Our team earned this," Allen said. "They are working so hard and have a great belief in themselves and continue to stay with it. This is the second time in two matches at home we have scored in the final minutes and they just don't quit."
Netminder Chloe Olson, who made her first start of the season, finished with five saves to earn her third-career shutout.
