LAKE FOREST, Illinois – Marquette University senior men's golfer Patrick Adler won his first collegiate event by five strokes on Monday afternoon, firing an 11-under 202 over 54 holes in the Windon Memorial Classic at Conway Farms Golf Club.
"It means a lot to me to win at Conway Farms, at home," Adler said. "I'm really close to Northwestern and their coaching staff because I grew up around the program. To be able to win at Conway Farms where I played as a junior in some junior tournaments and won a high school event there, was super cool. Especially to have some my family and friends there. It was awesome having their support."
Adler entered the week with just two collegiate rounds in the 60s to his name and reached the mark in all three rounds at Conway Farms. The native of nearby Winnetka, Illinois fired an opening round 65 and led the field from start to finish to become the third Golden Eagle to win the event, following in the footsteps of former MU All-Americans Mike Van Sickle (2007 at Lake Shore) and Hunter Eichhorn (2019 at Conway Farms). Adler's 11-under 202 is a record for an MU player in the event.
"Patrick's win today was one of the best individual performances in Marquette's history," MU head coach Steve Bailey said. "It's tough to win a college event individually, and for him to get it done by five shots, against a field of this caliber, is very impressive. This win is a byproduct of all those early mornings and all those bricks he's stacked over the last few years"
Past individual winners and runners-up of the tournament include Tiger Woods, Casey Martin, Luke Donald, Hunter Mahan, Scott Harington and Ben Curtis.
The Golden Eagles leapfrogged Northwestern in the final round on Monday and finished three stokes behind team champion Arizona in a tournament field that featured 11 teams that made NCAA Regionals each of the past two years. Fourteen of the 16 squads competed in regional play at least once in the past two years.
Second round play was suspended Sunday evening due to darkness with the Golden Eagles third as a team behind behind tournament-host Northwestern and Arizona.
"I'm super proud of the way our team competed this week," Bailey said of his squad that finished nine strokes ahead of third-place Northwestern. "We've placed a big emphasis on battling until the last putt falls. All five of our guys embraced that gritty attitude on a really tough golf course. Although we came up a few shots short of winning, this performance will be a huge boost for us moving forward."
Adler has been on a meteoric ascent since breaking into a veteran-laden MU lineup last fall. He recorded a 1-under 71 on the final day of last year's conference championship at Riverton Pointe and kept the momentum going this summer, winning the South of Ireland Open Championship at historic Lahinch Golf Club in County Clare as well as tying for 11th at the Wisconsin State Open.
"The course played super, super tough all week," Adler said. "The wind was blowing heavy during the 36-hole day and calmed down in the 18-hole round today. It is a course that really challenges you to stay disciplined and hit to the fat parts of greens and take your medicine when you need to. There are also some holes that you can take advantage of and fire at the flags. I think a lot of us took advantage of that this week and took our opportunities when we got them."
He is the first MU player to earn medalist honors since Bhoom Sima-Aree won the 2023 BIG EAST Individual Championship at Riverton Pointe Golf Club on April 28-30, 2023.
Adler began Sunday's shotgun start with a birdie on the par-3 11th hole and proceeded to jump out to an early lead at 5-under through five holes with consecutive eagles on Nos. 14 and 15. His career-low 65 on Sunday is the lowest score for a member of a Marquette lineup since Nicolas Evangelio's 65 in the second round of the Tiger Collegiate Invitational on April 11, 2023 at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri.
In addition to his two eagles in his opening round, Adler carded a total of eight birdies on Sunday, and until a bogey on the par-4 fifth hole, had only recorded a score over par on the par-4 16th hole with bogeys in each of his first two rounds. He finished the event with 14 birdies and a pair of eagles over 54 holes, with nothing higher than a bogey.
Junior transfer Johan Widal contributed greatly to MU's climb up the team leaderboard on Monday with a 5-under. His round included a pair of eagles on No. 18 and the par-4 third hole that he holed out from a fairway bunker.
